What does getting a tattoo actually feel like? Like a pin being dragged across your skin? A bee sting? A burning sensation? Or is it just plain unbearable? If you have a tattoo, vote in this forum poll and let us know what you think! If you don't have one, but were wondering that very thing, take a look at what our forum members are saying on the matter.

I have 7 tattoos – the foot hurt quite a bit – ankles a little….back not so much. Depends on your tolerance for pain and how much “padding” there is in the area you tattoo. Not agonizing. Totally tolerable unless you’re a real pain-weinie. Very addictive. I was only ever just going to get “one”…here I amd 7 years later with 7 tattoos…and I’ll be adding 2 more next month. Love them!

(21) Adam says:

I got my first tattoo a few months back. It is a larger cross between my shoulder blades. It did not “hurt” per say, more of an uncomfortable sting, but only lasts during impact. The worst part is the itching that follows days later. Won’t line, the needle to the spine didn’t feel great. But that might have been because I was 2 hours in and getting a bit tender. Contrary to what I heard from most, the filling was not worse by any means.

January 18, 2009 at 11:26 pm
(22) Raven says:

the long outline lines of a tattoo are the worst, depending on the tat being done….that does feel like long slashes with a very sharp knife or needle…the shading is a doddle…tho i have heard some people say the shading hurts the most….after the first 10 mins your skin goes quite numb so you dont feel much after that…if you sit for more than 3 hours it can get a bit hair-raising and my personal best is 4 hours…then my body has had enough….having a decent meal before is a good thing…drinking fruit juice while having the tat,and then another good meal after helps the body deal with all this energy being spent…then the tat just feels hot and very much like a graze….
to those of us serious collectors, the pain is as important as the final picture…haha…when i hear a tattoo machine i immediately want the pain…weird i know….its also kinda tribal to me as each of my tats are a ritual/rite of passage and another meaningful piece of my life…
i cant say ive had a bad experience with regard to pain…i dont like the sound of the needle as it goes over the elbow bone…it sounds like its drilling into you, but the pain is not bad…i DO think if you are really afraid and panic about what its going to feel like, you put your body on such a danger alert that all your nerve endings actually feel the pain worse than it is…this happened to my daughter, as she was so scared and almost fainted just having a 20min butterfly done…haha….its normal to be scared but if you really want a tattoo you will deal with it….

(27) Raven says:

I may be “The HennaChick” but, I love-love-love my ink. I have about 80 hours of ink and nowhere near done yet.
In all honesty, I have to fight to stay awake during a tattoo session. It’s more annoying at first than anything but I just ignore it and try to stay awake. I don’t want to jerk awake if my artist hits a twitchy spot. My sessions usually last 3-4 hours with a couple of breaks when we need nicotine. It’s not the tattooing that bothers me, it’s the healing for two weeks that drives me crazy. LOL
As a general rule, if it was THAT painful, people wouldn’t do it over and over and over again. If you want the ink bad enough, you will sit through it. Good Luck!

(33) Vince says:

im 16 just got my first one, its not as bad as everyone says, to be honest without sounding like an ego maniac, it doesn’t hurt at all really, more of an annoyance, feels like someone hitting sunburn but the pain goes away, your body sends endorphins to kill the pain, please don’t let the intimidation of pain keep you from getting one =]

(34) Veronica says:

I got an 8 inch color tattoo between my shoulder blades last week, and while the outlining wasn’t any big deal at all, the color shading was a whole new definition of pain! I was able to easily laugh through it for 3 hours, though, and I’m going back for more in 2 weeks, so how bad could it really be? It hurts, but it’s so worth it. You’ll forget all about the pain as soon as it’s over and you’ll be ready to do it all over again!

(40) CF says:

I just got my first one done on my back yesterday. The pain was pretty minor, sometimes I forgot the needle was in my back at all. The first few seconds were the worst part and even that wasn’t that bad. Also a fun fact, because of your nerve set up one side of your back hurts worse then the other. For me, the left was by far the worse, but it was still worth it all the way!

August 16, 2009 at 9:13 pm
(41) firestarter says:

I am truly a tattoo junkie. At this point in time I currently have over 50 tattoos. I guess that I would have to say that it depends on your tolerance for pain as to whether tattoos hurt or not. My husband is a tattoo artist I have seen people close to tears while other sit and it does not seem to faze them in the least. For me it is very relaxing, any time I have a stressful day I come home and tell my husband I need some ink.

(45) Brandon says:

I wouldnt recommend anyone under 25 getting a tattoo. I have friends that got that stupid barbed wire on their arms that they regret (and get made fun of) and girlfriends with the tat on the back for “something to look at” from behind. This shows the emotional state of difference when age 17 and 27 or 16 and 36. Dont get something that is “in” because it wont be “in” long and you will be made fun of as if we were still wearing parachute pants and doing the backspin, back in the days. Think long and hard, weeks, months or years, before you ink.

I have 2 tattoos and the 3 shooting stars i have on my boob didnt hurt at all but the one i got in the inside in my leg HURT well the outline was the part that hurt the shading in you can hardly feel. It just depends where you get it and how much pain you can handle getting my tongue pierced was way less pain then getting a tattoo

My boyfriend is a tattoo artist and i never wanted a tatt, but one day i changed my mind and took the plunge. I was so scared. But i think the vibrating of the machine and needle is worse than the actually pain. It feels like scratching really.

(50) tattoo bob @Carolina ink says:

Well where should I start? Here i guess:Being a tattooist(over 30 years)I don’t care about giving away “trade secrets”.I have about 160 tattoos(counting within my sleeves)I can tell you one thing:different needles have their own feel,,single needle have a hot feel(burning)the more tender the area the more burn(that’s why I outline with a tight 3 round)(and light shading)It doesn’t have that burning feeling just a little painful,(and a beautiful thin line and hair like shading)I color with a 15 round (and heavy shading)large round needles are more annoying that painful, now flat needles (single stack or magnums) that’s a whole different beast(they are where the saying “pushing ink”came from)they have more of a dragging thru the skin in reverse feel,Real painful in tender areas(in the business we call them garden rake’s)But everyone has their own tolerance for pain,But over my many years of tattooing this is what I have observed (and felt.)One thing I can tell people is to try to go to tattooist that not only tattoos others,,but also tattoos himself (not all do)I tattoo myself where ever i can reach. When they tattoo themselves they (“know the feel”) and are usually more of a gentle tattooist and that’s what you want to find!…….Bob

hey bob, i am 14 years old and where i live i am able to get a tattoo. i can take pain. i wanted to get a tattoo of a treble clef on my lower neck between my 2 shoulder blades. will it hurt?

October 6, 2009 at 9:59 am
(52) Tony Terror says:

basically, it depends completely on the area of the tattoo and your pain tolerance.

normally, the more muscle on the area the less it hurts, very soft fleshy parts of your skin will hurt quite a bit more. for example, near your armpit i’ve found to be the most painful place.

I find normally on a muscle, its completely bearable, somewhat like a pin dragging. however near my armpit it feels a bit more like a burning hot pin. however this is only for short seconds at a time in most cases.

also keep in mind shading hurts considerably less than lining.

truth is you’ll never know untill you get one. start small, and give yourself a good idea of your tolerance, then you can decide wether you wanna tackle a large peice or not.

(53) Robert says:

i want to get my first tattoo on my neck. There isnt alot of muscle there. And i hear the pain isnt that bad. Im jw how bad it would hurt on my neck?

October 12, 2009 at 7:24 am
(54) ta2dlady says:

The most important thing to remember is that everyone is different in their pain tolerance, different body parts hurt in different ways and the pain can change from day to day (or for that matter, from minute to minute). I could not sit for longer than an hour each sitting when my ribs were tattooed. But I sat for four and a half hours when my hip was being inked. I fell asleep when my upper left arm was tattooed. When my back was inked it felt like someone was scratching my back really hard; it was not even close to painful, just intense.
Also, the immediate “ouch!” goes away as soon as the artist lifts the needle from your skin.
Your endorphins will kick in about ten minutes into your experience. They may not dull the sensations completely but will help.
You will learn to love green soap. It feels so good when the artist is using the green soap to clean up an area so he can see what he is doing.
It will help to focus on the end result – hopefully a kick-a$$ tattoo!
Good luck!

(58) shy says:

ok. i went with my sister to get a tatt the other day and i asked about the difference between girls and guys when getting one. basics? he pretty much broke it down into, well, guys are little girls. he said they tend to pick a more fleshy part of the body and even then hes seen a few guys almost cry over a 30 minute tattoo. and watched a couple girls go through a 4 hour session with no breaks and no tears. im very excited to get my tattoo. just because i know it doesnt hurt like people say it does

November 7, 2009 at 3:52 pm
(59) grakify says:

Well I got a tattoo on my upper inner arm. Before I got it I did some research and a lot of people told me it was one of the most painful spots to get a tattoo. But to be honest, it wasn’t that bad. Then again, I’m a girl, and girls are usually tougher than men men it comes to pain haha ;P

November 18, 2009 at 2:44 pm
(60) Danom8 says:

I’m 19 and got my first tattoo last week. Everyone said it woluld be agony so i was really shaking going in. It’s on the outside of my lower arm from my elbow to my wrist.

As soon as I heard the needle vibrating I started to panic but once it touch my skin I was like, “Is that it?”

Maybe it’s just that I have a high pain tolerance but it was really nothing. I also got it on the bone and I’m quite thin. Still though it’s just like having sunburn and somebody rubbing it. It’s by no means unbearable, in fact I kind of liked the sensation after a few minutes.

(61) Amber says:

Just turned 18 today and got my first tattoo! It’s a quote, “Dream as if you’ll live forever, Live as if you’ll die today.” I got it on my ribs but truthfully, its not as bad as people make it out to be, to me its just about how well you can tolerate pain… =] Im def going to have more done.

(62) tia says:

I have 2 tats. One on my ankle and the other on my calf. I don’t have no tolerance of pain at all. I’m afraid of getting a shot or blood drawn. Getting a tat in those areas wasn’t bad at all. It’s really a mind thing. Today I’m going for one on my hip.

December 31, 2009 at 1:03 am
(63) sarah says:

The pain really depends on where you get it and how your pain tolerance is. Anywhere over a bone is going to hurt worse than over a layer of fat. I got mine on my lower back and it was fine when he started but toward the end it started getting sore and hurt more. My tattoo was also pretty big. I would start with a smaller one the first time.

I recently got a tattoo and i dont think it feels like what anyone else has said i got my tattoo on the side of my forearm and all that it felt like was like your hairs on your arm getting pulled over and over again which doesent really hurt that much but in some places when shading feels like pulling a bit harder but it is totally down to pain tolerance.

I realize a lot of question were asked, and unfortunatly I have no experience and so no advice.. But in case you read my question, should I get a tattoo of my mother’s name (long name) on my upper back (centered between blades) or around my ankle (the way rings are engraved)?

January 28, 2010 at 3:36 pm
(69) Liquid says:

God damn it, CHILDREN at the age of 12, 13 or 14 should not get tattooed. I know how it feels like, i was absolutely crazy for a tattoo on that age, but waiting a bit longer really pais off. And to all of you incredibly pain-tolerant guys and gals, you have got to be kidding me. It felt like a vibration?! It HURTS AS HELL! Every experience is different, i know, but to say that it didn’t hurt, is absurd. My tattoo on the upper back was done in almost 3 hours, with only one short break, and it hurt pretty bad. The filling felt thousand times worse, in my case.

(71) Hillary says:

It did feel like a pin being dragged repeatedly across my skin. But honestly I do have very low pain tolerance and it didn’t hurt as much as i thought it would. It’s not unbearable, so I’d think it’ll be fine. I’m getting another one soon, just not sure where.

i also heard of this numbing cream. i used to use it for my blood tests, cause i used to be shit scared of em. i anit now, it barley hurts. the point is, even after 45 mins (which is how long you ment to wait for) it didn’t work, and made the area swollen.
the ironc thiing is, 2 days laater, i couldnt fel a thing where the cream was. sigh.

(74) Hunterrrrr! says:

suup people. i losst my big sister last year on april 14th, 2009. Horrible car accident, i hope none of yall have to go through that kind of situation.
But, i got angel wings and put her full name in between the wings. & then i got the date she was born above her name, & the day she passes away below her name.
I got it in between my shoulder blades. Ill tell you that at the beginning of getting the tattoo, it ached. Like a sore tooth would, it eventually went numb. So, high pain tolerance or not, it all depends on how scared you are.
Its just needles, so believe me when i say It doesn’t hurt bad. Yes it itches, but that’s the worst part about it.

peaceee outttt, :p

I have a tribal backpiece, almost full back, work in progress this was a cover up of a stupid mistake that most first timers do placing miss. tats anywhere later seeing how unrealated and misplaced they were. Always know what u want now and in the future before placing ink. Anyway I sat for 7 and a half hours with a few small breaks. I’am not sure about anyone else but after sitting that long I kinda go into a zone where I don’t really feel anything anymore. Has anymore else gotten this zone while getting inked? After a long sitting like that I think my body was telling me it had enough because I started to shake , shiver I think it was sort of a shock like issue. But sat it out and finished the tat that day. The place where I got my done said it was the longest sitting in a very long time. I would not say that a first timer try anything this big and that long of a sitting for their first time. Again I do not think that getting inked hurts at all, as a matter of fact I think its very addicting.

I have wanted the same tattoo since I was 17 and now that I am 21 I got it today.I was nervous I’ll admit that but get yourself a tattoo artist that you like and would have fun talking to,the guy that did mine talked to me and we had fun talking about different stuff. If you can get an artist that will talk to you it helps the experience of having the tattoo. But after I sat down it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be,at first its like a hot scratch jabbing at up 100 times a second, there is a little pain but relax if its what you really want you can bear it,I plan on going back for a 2nd soon!! Good luck!! Relax and make sure its what u really want its worth it!!!

What i would have gotten when i was thirteen or around that age is totally different than what i would have wanted today. i have wanted to do something like this since i was young but i enjoyed having time to plan exactly what i want and now i’m getting my dream tat. don’t rush it, you’ll have enough time in your life

(83) Joel says:

It is funny to read all of the different opinions about the level of pain. I have two tattoos, both on my chest and they hurt a little bit, but nothing unbearable. I mean, it is a needle puncturing your skin at a high rate of speed right? Clearly, the one truth that consistently is reported is that the areas closer to bone hurt more than the more fatty areas. My collar bone and sternum hurt worse than further away on the chest. For me, the fill-in and shading was more painful than the outlining, but it seems as if different people have different opinions. I would compare the overall level of discomfort to a consistent minor bee sting. After a while, you just sort of get used to it and it seems to hurt less. For me, after three hours pass the pain starts coming back after the endorphins wear off. That’s my 2 cents worth. Just don’t let the pain be the thing to scare you off.

Got my first tatoo yesterday on my wrist. I am 23 and have been convinced of the tatoo that I wanted for over 2 years. I always promised myself I would wait, sit on the idea, and if i still wanted it in a year I would get it… I waited 2 and the same tatoo felt just as meaningful.

To all the young ones… I agree – you should definitely wait until you at least 18. It’s never going anywhere once its there so you might as well be absolutely certain that it is what you want, where you want it, and at this age you a have little more of an idea about what you want to do with your life and it wont interfere with that.

Needless to say, I am in love with my tatoo and I totally want another already!

(94) Rob says:

Ok people. Anyone thinking of getting a tattoo, dont be under any illusions about the pain. Anyone that says getting a tattoo doesnt hurt is LYING. It does hurt, but its bearable and well worth it. It feels like a very sharp needle scratching your skin. But like so many others on here i have 8 tattoos and getting more done next week on my ribcage. As the saying says “No pain, No gain” Get to the tattoo parlour and get inked. Just one piece of advice, make sure you pick a design that you will like for the rest of your life, i had my first 3 when i was 14 and 15 and now i hate them and getting them covered.

Im 13, and I want to get a tattoo for a medical alert. I just wanted some opinions on if it really does hurt as much as people say. Someone said its less painful then getting ears pierced. is that true? cuz I already have my ears pierced and that didnt really hurt a bit.
So Im getting it done on July 7th (hopefully depending on other things going on) and Im getting it on my inside wrist, I was also wondering if the inside wrist hurts a lot?

So anyone who has any knowledge on that, Please say anything youve got, thanks a lotttt

I got my first tattoo yesterday on my lower hip, and it took 2.5 hours. It felt like a sharp knife repeatedly was cutting or scraping over my skin. While I was on that chair, I was thinking…I don’t want to do it ever again. Well, when the process was over, it didnít feel all that bad. Now I have a beautiful tattoo that accentuates my curves and looks so natural like it belongs to my body. I am definitely going back again to get my custom tattoo this fall. Certainly, getting a tattoo is not a pleasurable process, but the pain can be tolerable. So just make sure you can handle the pain though because it will hurt.

make sure you eat!! having low blood sugar will cause your adrenaline to make you pass out. Ilearned the hard way on my first tat. the 2nd tat I was eating a buger and did great. Huge difference and VERY important to remember. Pain wise it alllll depends where it is. Skin that is constantly exposed is tougher than say the sides of your torso or the inside of your arms. Those are more tender areas and WILL be more painful than others. But my motto is its nothing that a normal human being cannot endure.

I’m thinking about getting a tattoo on the inside of my right hip. The same area as this one in this picture –> http://www.pootattoo.com/Images/hip%20tattoo%201.jpg

I’m the type of person who always worries about how much pain it is going to be, so it always ends up hurting more than it is supposed to (because I anticipate it). But I want to know what the pain level is of getting one in that area? My friend said hers tickled XD Another question is.. is there anyway I can try and “test” what the pain MIGHT be like? When I got my ears periced my mom told me to pintch my ears with my finger nails… which actually helped because I was expecting that pain but when I got them periced, it was nothing XD

All answers are helpfull :) Thank you!

I have 23 tattoos, It honestly doesn’t hurt much – all depends of where you get it , best way to find out is to pinch where you want it done – if that hurts , then you know ! Anywhere that there is thin skin i.e coller-bone, bottom of back by spin , hip, ribs or behind the knee ! Places like shoulders and stomachs dont hurt , everyone has differant pain barries ! Don’t listen to people who say man up and all this , just get it done when you feel !

A bit of advice about stomach tattoos. If you’re planning on having kids in the future (and you’re a girl) and you get a tattoo on your stomach or hips theres a chance that after you have a kid and your stomach tries to go back to normal your tattoo will be stretched out and look really strange. I’ve wanted one on my hip for a long time but I’m gonna wait it out until I’m for sure done having kids.

Use your own drug of choice, but don’t show up wasted (they’ll turn you away, at that point!) Once your endorphins kick in, it might even become pleasurable! The Green Soap will feel like Angels Kissing your Skin. Focus on the end result. I can’t wait to get my next one!

November 23, 2010 at 8:35 pm
(125) keeks13 says:

it feels like youre getting a needle, but it’s more of a burning sensation.

obviously more places are more painful than others depending on the parts of your body with more muscle. in my opinion, the arms and legs are the least painful.

by far the worst spot for pain that i have tattooed is my ribs. i have a pretty high tolerance for pain, but that felt like my ribs were being pried apart by rusty chains while my insides were lit with a blowtorch.

the greatest part about the tattoo process is while the artist is working on your skin, it’s such an intense pain in that one spot, or if they hit a nerve you can feel a twinge of pain elsewhere in your body (when i got my hip done i felt it all the way in my bellybutton), but once they take the gun off your skin you don’t feel a damn thing.

after about 15 – 30 minutes your endorphines kick in dulling the pain a bit, and of course when your all cleaned up and youre in the healing process it’s swollen and kinda feels like a sunburn. that only lasts a few days though. over the week or two that it heals the swelling goes down and it itches like crazy, but after that it’s smooth sailing.

if you can sit through the pain, the end result is well worth it.

Really??? I have a sleeve and some other major work and it honestly felt like having rubber bands snapped against my skin. I was so nervous when I got my first piece. Going into the shop that day I really had this cooky idea that the needle would be plunging deep into the muscular layers of my skin like a some kind of tortuous vaccine needle, over and over and over again. As I sat there through the first 5…then 30…then 60 minutes of the session I remember thinking “Is this really it??!!” Even the work inside my upper arm near my armpit wasn’t as insane as I thought it would be. Tender, yes…but unbearable?? NO!!! It really does remind me of being snapped with rubber bands. To all you worrisome newbies out there, DON’T PSYCH YOURSELF OUT! You can do it!

I’m 14 and im thinking about getting a tattoo on my arm (it will be of a cross) and after reading the comments im not as scared as i was at first but i just have a question.. after its all done and what not what does it feel like while its healing.. like does it feel like an itch on your arm? and if i do end up scratching it will it mess it up?

March 21, 2011 at 4:26 am
(141) nikita says:

After the first couple days it gets really dry so it helps to get some UNSCENTED lotion (if its scented it could get infected) and put it on at night after washing it with only water and no soap. Even with lotion it will still be really itchy. If you scratch it you could cause the scabs to come off and it could damage your tattoo. If the scabs come off the ink comes off with it because its not healed into the skin properly yet. So, in short: soap, no water; unscented lotion; and no matter how bad you want to touch it keep your hands off of it! :D

I have 2 tatoos. They are on my wrist and forearm. To say a tattoo is uncofortable or painful isn’t wrong but its not entirely true either. It depends where you get the tattoo. On the top of your foot or shoulder blade you’ll feel a little uncomfortable like someones poking you with a needle, but its vibrating on your bone. Areas like your arms/calves is all muscle which doesn’t hurt, but burns a little.

I have my lip pierced as well.. and I’d rather get 4 tattoos to one piercing. Honestly the split second of a needle piercing your skin hurts more than a tattoo in my opinion.

I have three tattoos. the first one is in the middle of my back…silly place to get one the first time. I was very nervous, but once the needle started buzzing it was a breeze. After the first touch I am addicted to the feeling. It honestly feels like a small vibrator. Lol. I also have a tattoo on my lower calf. This one was more painful. I was sweating bullets, and oh man was I resting to moan. It was the most erotic feeling coming from a needle. The last tattoo I have recently gotten is on my hand, wrapping around my ring finger. It is a dragon protecting the words one love-one life. This piece was worth the pain i felt when the artist went around my finger was almost terrible. So I advise those who want a tattoo to get a test run. The tattoo artist can run a needle over your skin without any ink. If you like what you feel jump in the boat and row with me.

I’ve gotten 3, one on the back of my neck, one on the upper part of my back just below my back between my shoulder blades…. and the last one I just had done on my side. It’s just under my arm and goes down to my waist and curves up to the ribs just under my breast. This was the most painful out of all of them. The ribs under my breast was like a hot dull blade being dug into my skin. . . the rest is about the same only without the fire sensation. The outline and the shading felt the same mostly. There were some parts of the tattoo that didn’t hurt at all. It felt like light scratching. . but this could be after the adrenaline kicked in. After the two hour session I was loopy. And it hurt like hell the entire time. The one on my back and neck hurt considerably less. The one on my neck didn’t really hurt at all. For an idea of what the least painful part of a tattoo feels like, take a needle and scratch it repeatedly over your skin with a little pressure but not enough to puncture..obviously. Thin skin over bone hurts the most it seems but over muscle is pretty painful, too. Bottom line, tattoos hurt. Depends on your pain threshold but don’t believe anyone who says it doesn’t hurt at all. They’re trying to be a badass and are lying or were too drunk to notice or remember. The pain is worth it though because you’ll have an art piece on your body for the rest of your life.

Appartently it depends on where you have your tattoo inked and also on how professional the tattoo artist is. Thanks for the article.

Ok so for all you guys & gals asking if it hurts.. yes it does all tattoos do. You will feel some pain so if ur a sissy don’t get one. I know some people are on here trying to act tuff and say it doesn’t hurt at all blah blah blah well it may not be the most painful thing in the world but you will feel the pain… If ur one of these kids on here who is 13-14 or whatever and ur talking about getting a tat you better think long and hard about it because that is on your body for life! If you really want a tattoo you will get it done but if pain is the main reason why you are waiting then you probably shouldn’t get one at all.REMEMBER tattoo’s are art that is why people like them so much it’s a good way to express yourself. It something you need to think long and hard about. In my personal opinion don’t get a tattoo until you are 18 and don’t need mommy and daddy to go with you.

I just got a tattoo a couple hours ago. I got “Believe” on my wrist. I thought I had a pretty good pain tolerance, well the first 10 minutes while he was outlining I thought I was gunna die from pain, it felt like someone was putting fire right on it. After he was done outlining I couldn’t feel a thing since the skin goes numb.

I just got my son’s name with a heart tattooed on my ankle after he passed away. He would be shocked because I swore it was something I would never do, but drastic times call for drastic measures :-) I didn’t think it hurt much at all.

just got my first tattoo yesterday, love it! going back for more! this is what a tattoo feels exactly like: there are different kinds of pain. the most painful part is the outline, which is first. it feels like someone is has pushed a small tack just under your skin and then drags it. its a cutting sensation but would give it a 6-7 on pain scale. then comes the shading which varies from a burning feeling to practically nothing. the shading would vary from a 1-3 on pain scale and feels much better than the outline. all in all though, it hurt alot less than i thought it would and had a great time :)

In my opinion age doesn’t matter, its the level of maturity. Though I’ll agree with you that most 16 year olds and younger are better off waiting before they get their first tattoo. I’m reading about 11 year olds getting tattoo’s in this and I’m pretty sure thats illegal, atleast where I’m from. I got my first one at 16 because that was the age that you were legally allowed at the shop I go to.

When I was 14 I was soooo sure I wanted a tattoo of a music note. After a few months went by I realized, what the hell was I thinking? I don’t even play an instrument or sing or anyything…

I think it’s best to get your tattoo drawn up exactly how you want it and hang it somewhere that you’ll see it every day and wait a few months then decide if you still want it after seeing it every day, because heyy, you’re gonna see it every day for the rest of your life once you get it so if you can’t handle a month or two of it, it was a bad idea.

My tolerance for pain isnt really low it’s just My mind makes it out to be more than it is. Any ideas will help thanks!!

Just try not to get yourself too worked up about it. When I got my first one i was realllyy scared about it. I considered cancelling it and doing it later but I just sucked it up and got on with it. I was pleasantly surprised by how little it did hurt. I don’t have one on my ribs (but am planning on it) but I have one on my foot which, in a sense, is similar because they are both spots with thin skin and a lot of bone. I will tell you, it definitely hurts a lot more on somewhere boney than somewhere with some fat on it. But I think if you get one on your ribs for your first tattoo it will make any others you get in the future a breeze. My first tattoo was on my upper back and shoulder blades. I was suuper scared and when the tattoo artist started tattooing I was so shocked by how little it hurt. There was some spots that hurt a bit, the spine wasn’t too pleasant, but I wouldn’t really call it painful. But on my shoulders on the parts with a bit more fat on them it didn’t hurt at all. Actually it tickled in some spots. My foot hurt a lot more but still not unbarable. The worst part about it was whenever he tattooed on a very boney part it would make my leg twitch and its veryy difficult to control that haha. But I’d just say to go in it with an open mind about how it will feel because it most likely won’t be anywhere near as bad as you think it will be. goodluck!

I’m 17, and I’ve wanted a tattoo for about 4 years, BUT my pain tolerance isn’t what it used to be. When I was 14, a friend and I were kidding around, giving each other tiny “tattoos” on our ankles. We took a needle, and after failing at poking, we scratched our nick names into our skin, and then colored over with a black crayola marker. We only drew a very tiny bit of blood, enough to blot with a paper towel put not enough to drip from the cuts. We didn’t honestly think they would last, but I was wondering if maybe that scratching feeling would be comparable to a tattoo?

Hello, I’m 13 and i’m getting a tattoo at Easter. For all those people who think that i’m ‘too young’ or anything, i’ve wanted this tattoo for a while.
i’m getting ‘love’ tattooed on my wrist, with a heart attached to the L. I know someone that will do it for me, and it’s all booked and everything.
I was wondering if there was any way to describe the pain, obviously its going to hurt, because someones sticking a needle in you, but i was wondering if there was any way to describe it and also any way of numbing it.
thanks.

Hey Guys,
I’m 19 and I’ve wanted to get a tattoo since I was 14 and now thay I’m in a place where I can afford, I’m taking the final steps to getting it done and I am so excited. I want to get it behind my ear and I was wondering how badly that hurts because it’s not exactly a fatty area and I’ll be the first one to admit I don’t have much tolerance for pain but I want this badly enough to suck it up. I would just like to have an idea on what to expect when I finally go in there. Any takers?
