Question of the Week - Ear Jewelry in Nose Piercings

Saturday October 11, 2003
Q:I got my nose pierced and the inside is really swollen. What kind of earring should I get for it because I cant even fit a backing on!

A:Well, that could certainly explain why it's so swollen, first of all. Ear jewelry, specifically the kind with "backing" is not intended for nose piercings. Half the time, they're not even appropriate for ear piercings, but I digress.

Appropriate and high quality jewelry is essential for any new-healing piercing. The best jewelry for most new piercings, including the nose, is the captive bead ring or CBR. The shape lends itself to easy cleaning and no worries about "backing" that you can't get on and off.

High quality surgical stainless steel, niobium or titanium jewelry is best for any piercing, especially a new one or for someone who has tendancies toward allergic reactions. High quality jewelry is sold in tattoo and piercing studios or reputable online jewelry suppliers like The Chain Gang - not mall shops. Imitations may look like the good stuff, but can cost you a bundle in pain and suffering in the long run.

I have the same problem. I had my nose pierced by a very reputable gentleman but the inside of the nostril is incredibly swollen. The ring is a hook-type, no back, and made of white gold, so I know that that’s not the problem. Also, whenever I brush it, it pops back out and is very painful to get through the inside part of the nise (the outside of the hole is easy). Any help or advice?? It would be REALLY appreciated. Liz

The author doesn’t answer the question instead she tells her what she should have done…a little to late for that. Better to actually answer the questions at this point because it probably would help her out a lot more.
