Forum Discussion - Tattoos and Copyrighted Art

Sunday August 22, 2004
The question is whether or not a tattoo artist would be willing to tattoo a replica of a picture, poster, photograph, etc. that has copyright protection. Although we are not lawyers, this is our understanding on the matter...

Taesa Mahnee writes: "There is a copyright to the artist on every piece of art. If you were to take the poster and reproduce exact copies multiple times, and sell them to make a profit, that would be copyright infringement. If you buy the poster, take it to your artist and have him/her translate it to your skin, it's personal use.
If your artist were to take the poster, hang it on the wall in the shop, and offer it repeatedly to his/her clients as flash, that would be copyright infringement. So long as you find an artist that's interested in the subject matter and will do the piece justice, I don't think you'll have a problem finding someone to do the tattoo."
