Question of the Week - Lumbar (Lower Back) Tattoos and Epidurals
Sunday November 20, 2005
Q: I was wondering, is it true that if you get a tattoo on your back you are unable to have the [epidural] when giving birth?
A: I've actually answered this question before but it continues to pop up. The short and sweet answer is no, it is not true. The funny thing is that I have even heard of doctors giving out this false information to their clients, so it's not just a wild rumor. However, there is no reason why a tattoo would affect your ability to have an epidural during childbirth. For more information on this, read Lower Back Tattoos and Epidurals.

i’m a reporter with the wall street journal and i am interested in anyone who have either had an epidural with a lower back tattoo or been denied one. thanks.
My sister in law had an epidural through her lower back tattoo (right through ink) they warned her there might be side effects in relation to the ink. But she was perfectly fine.
