Question of the Week - Bump On Piercing

By March 19, 2006

Follow me on:

nosebumpblog.jpgQ: I have a question about my nose piercing. I got it under 2 months ago. Anyways, now around my nose piercing on the outside, it's swollen and looks absolutely disgusting! Its like a big bump around the nose on the outside. This swollen area doesn't really hurt or anything but it's simply gross. I didn't have this bump before - but i think I got this bump because I kept on changing the actual piercing - I'm not exactly sure if this is the exact cause. I wanted to know if anyone knows the solution to this problem...HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS NASTY BUMP and WHY IS IT THERE???

A: No need to panic...this is very common. But you will need to do a few things.

First, you need to put in a quality surgical stainless steel, niobium or titanium CBR in the piercing but do not do it yourself. Buy the jewelry at your professional piercing studio (tattoo/piercing shop, NOT Claire's or Piercing Pagoda) and they will help you find the right size and put it in for you for free. Then, you will need to leave your CBR in for several weeks - no changing the jewelry until it is completely healed. Second, you need to clean your piercing properly and do about 3 sea salt soaks every day until the bump is completely gone. Cleansing and sea salt soak instructions are here: http://tattoo.about.com/cs/beginners/l/blpiercingtlc.htm Once your piercing is completely healed, you can change the jewelry - again, use high quality jewelry only from a professional shop and let them put it in for you so you don't accidentally damage anything in the process. Good luck to you - I'm sure your piercing will be just fine. My nose did exactly the same thing and this happens all the time. If at any time it becomes infected - painful, red, hot, pussing green ooze - then you need to see a doctor. Otherwise, these instructions should help you heal up just fine.

(6) Lisa says:

I’d like to say that I wouldn’t attempt to pick anything.. The worse thing (In some cases) could cause Infentigo.. or a bigger infection. I barely have an immune system at all so I have to be careful of what I do. I recommend calling your local “Licensed” body piercer to find out what is wrong and what do they think is best for use.

I have this same problem. I used sea salt crushed into warm water and it’s getting a lot better.

(7) Jenn says:

I had that with my nose piercing as well. I called the piercer and they called it a keloid which is just your body reacting to the new piercing. I have had mine done it will be a year in July and I have not had another issue with it.

(13) em says:

I had one too. I was cleaning it with salt water (and often) and then I read that salt water is way too strong and that you shouldn’t even clean it with anything; your body can heal itself. So i stopped cleaning it or touching it at all and it went away completely

July 23, 2007 at 7:13 pm

(18) Chloe says:

i had my nose done a few years ago now, i really like it until a few weks into the healing process it got this lump, it looked realy ugly and sat just beside the stud. i went back to the place i had it done, and she told me its a very common blood filled lump called a ‘Granuloma’ (GRAN-U-LO-MA)
She told me that the small alcohol wipes (the ones they wipe the nose with first to remove germs and residue) would work by drying it out. sure enough, i used these 3 times a day and it got smaller and smaller, untill 1 day it dropped off.

January 21, 2008 at 12:13 am
(34) Corey says:

I heard that you DONT use tea tree oil and stuff like that because if you dont miss it correctly then it can actually burn the skin.

i have the same bump and it comes and goes, and goes and comes. it annoys me but I use sea salt water. I guess it kind of works

January 22, 2008 at 11:59 pm
(35) gia says:

its really common with nose piercings to get those bumps. i have my nose pierced on both sides and the bumps come and go on each side. dont use tea tree oil. if you think the sea salt soaks dry out your skin, tea tree oil is a nightmare. ive tried h2ocean, ripping it off, its going to keep coming back if you play with your jewelry, or take it out too much. i know its gross when it gets crusty, but dont twist it around! leave it or use a qtip with cold water to clean it. and if you just HAVE to take it out and cant stand the bump till it goes away on its own, take it out for a little bit. do a hot sea salt compress, or a hot chamomile tea compress. do that 2 or 3 times a day for ten minutes. but DONT leave your piercing out for like more than an hour or it will start to close up. hope that works for some of you.

January 23, 2008 at 12:05 am
(36) gia says:

here’s something else you can try. might work i have no idea

(37) marc says:

I have a bump too. It’s not only on my outside of my nose but inside too. I’ve had the piercing for about a month. I Don’t know hat to do!! And I certainly don’t want to hear “I told you so!” From my mother!!!!! HELP!

February 10, 2008 at 1:51 pm
(38) Aimee says:

Hey, don’t worry about the bump, it’s nothing serious. It’s called granuloma and is nothing more than a bit of scar tissue. I have the same thing on my nose and what I’ve found that is helping are hot compresses. You just heat water up to as hot as you can take it comfortably (anymore and you’ll burn it and that wouldn’t help) and then take a cloth and soak it in there and apply it to your nose for about 5-15 minutes. I recommend using bottled water because it IS cleaner than tap. Also, cleaning twice a day (once in the morning, once before bedtime) with a sea salt solution (500 mL of water to 1/4 sea salt) and a single drop of slightly diluted tea tree oil once or twice a week should help it clear up. If you find the skin around your nose starts drying and flaking, stop using the tea tree oil because that means it’s drying the area out and your piercing needs moisture. Good luck, I hope yours goes away; mine’s getting there.

(39) renee says:

February 12, 2008 at 9:28 pm
(40) anthony says:

i have an industrial piercing, and i have the same problem.
but i have to UGLY bumps on my ear, on the inside not where the balls are.
but i read everyones comments, and ill jus wait it out. i dont want to try all those things and be discouraged if they dont work.
but my bumps came a few weeks, a little over a month after i got it done. dec 17, 2007 to be exact. but yes the skin is now starting to peel like someone mentioned. and no they arent pain ful…just eye sores, lol.
and heres another question. what is the difference between these bumps and kiloids? i know kiloids never go away unless removed threw sugery, but how can i be so sure it isnt a kiloid??

February 19, 2008 at 12:17 am

(42) alexis says:

wow i got mine pierced around christmas time and the bump just popped up. i thought it was a pimple, but i never hardly changed my nose ring so i did and cleaned it. its not infected though right? and if i dont go to a professional do you think it will still go away if i clean it?

March 6, 2008 at 10:36 pm
(43) alexis (again) says:

March 14, 2008 at 5:33 pm
(44) parker says:

March 24, 2008 at 3:52 pm
(45) Jillian says:

Use at night, soak a q-tip, and I mean dripping soak, get it all around the piercing, not the inside though…

it will peel away. my bump was larger than my actual piercing, so it took like a week, but most people have reported 3 days.

Try it out, Australian Tea Tree Oil.

March 28, 2008 at 1:17 pm
(46) robyn says:

I had the same problem. I had a bump around my nose ring. But mine kept scabbing up, and it would bleed. For a few minutes. I kept cleaning, and i put neporsn on it it did this for a few weeks. i removed it the other day. But i’ve had piercing’s before and never had a problem like that before. But one thing is I will not get my nose pierced again……

April 1, 2008 at 3:13 am
(47) Olivia says:

I have the bump too! My nose ring fell out in the shower, so I just left it out. But, now I have this bump and I need it to go away. I’m trying to soak it in sea salt, but nothing is working. Are you sure this is normal?

April 7, 2008 at 10:54 am
(48) Melissa says:

I’ve seriously had the same problem.
My bump looks bloody red though and it’s small, and everyone says they can’t notice it, but I DO!!
it’s so annoying. my mom keeps telling me it’s a zit, and i don’t think it is, because it’s seriously right next to the hole. and I’ve been trying sea salt soaks, and it isn’t working.
so I might try the tree oil crap.
But idk man.
everyones telling me it’s a zit. and it’s not.
it doesn’t look like one, nor feel like one.
it’s just weird looking. and i want it gone SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone, seriously give me some good tips, something that’ll actually work.

(58) diana says:

I had my nose pierced a couple years ago and a couple months in I got this kind of bump that wouldn’t go away so I took the piercing out because it kept getting bigger (and sea salts soaks weren’t doing anything). But this year I got it re-done. It’s been almost 6 months with no problems, but a few days ago I got bad allergies and the bump appeared! Ahh! So this time I broke down and bought tea tree oil at my local Walgreens. I have been using it for 2 days now and the bump is almost gone! Amazing stuff and I don’t mind the smell (it reminds me of my painting supplies).
Here’s what I do: gently wash the piercing with mild soap and warm water. Then with a q-tip, apply only a small bit to the bump. Do not over saturate it because it will get IN the hole and that’s not the best. Also, do NOT get it in the inside of your nose. I apply it once when I wake up and once before I go to bed. But you might want to start with just once before bed to see how sensitive you are to it. If you have sensitive skin it will dry it out badly.

i have this thing too and it anoys the hell out me but not on a side the middle even worse!!! i have had it with this (bump)dumb!!!

(60) Jennifer says:

ok I got rid of mine after 2 months of trying everything…This is how I did it… Went to a tattoo and peircing place they removed the stud and put a hoop (ring) and said it will stop the top of the stud from bumping it. Then they told me to get BC or Goodies asprin powder and mix it with 100% tea tree oil to make a toothpaste like paste…apply it to the “bump” and leave it there for 15-20 min and then with warm water wipe it of and apply a little bit of the tea tree oil and within a week it will be gone. And well mine was gone in 2 days but he told me to do it for 7-10 days…Do it it works!!!

July 5, 2008 at 11:22 pm
(61) jesica says:

Sure enough i have the bump also. I got mine back in march and it did not start acting up untill my stud went thru and i had to shove it back thru to the outside. I tride the soaks and it did not work. Eventually i popped it with a needle and it came back smaller and i popped it again. now i am using vitamin e oil. it has not came back so hopefully it is gone!! glad im not the only one ;)

(62) Natalie says:

I had my nose pierced 2 years ago, things went well for the first few months then pooff a gross bump formed. My piercer said to just do like I was doing and clean it with sea salt soaks. 2 months later the bump was still there and so I decided to take my nose ring out. About 3 weeks ago I decided to get it redone hoping I wouldn’t have any problems. A week ago the bump came back, I had gotten H2Ocean spray and provon so I didn’t know why it was there! Turns out my body was having a bad reaction to sea salt and it was causing more problems then helping. I read this website and decided to try the BC asprin and tea tree oil paste, after 2 days my bump was gone! It seriously works wonders and to anyone having this problem I say give it a try!

July 15, 2008 at 7:38 pm
(63) Jondon says:

(66) KT says:

I had a red bump next to my nose ring and i freaked out! WORD OF ADVICE *DO NOT TAKE NOSE RING OUT*. I made that mistake and it was painful putting it back in. Anyways i went to the place i had gotten it peirced and they told me to do sea salt water soaks where you heat up some water poor in sea salt and use q-tips or a paper towel and soak the bump. Also, the guy told me a trick to do. He said to crunch up advil and coat it over the bump like a past (water then put advil) and leave it over night. After a week it was looking better and then i decided to juse treat it like a blimish and i used face cream on it and now it is completely gone! NO scar or anything! thank god!

Ok…I had this and the answer is short but not too sweet! Everyone I’m sure has noticed that this bump does not present any pain. So, I simply took a pair of toe nail clippers and snipped it off! Didn’t hurt a bit.

I woke up with a nasty bump the other day, it was bigger then the stud and red and shiny. I read everything I could find online and decided to try a couple things. First I put hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and left it on for a few mintues followed by another cotton ball soaked in sea salt and hot water. After using the cotton ball I poured the sea salt water over my nose and that was it. I did this twice in one day and by the next day the bump was half the size it had been and is still going down.

aww man I have one too and its so disgusting I hate it!! lol but I’m going to try the sea salt soak 3 times daily and hopefully it will go away soon! :) I just wanted to say too that I learned you have to make sure the salt is natural sea salt (no ionized) (so no table salt) or else its going to sting!

(76) hatty says:

Hey guys, my bump came around two months after I had my nose pierced, it looked EXACTLY like the one in the photo. I must admit I just kind of burst it and squeezed it (eww) but of course it came straight back. Anyway, I got some tea tree oil, not really expecting it to work, but it really has done the trick! It only took about three days and now it’s totally gone! I can wear a little stud again rather than the huge on I’d been wearing to cover the gross bump. If it does return I guess I’ll do the same process again, but I certain recommend at least trying the tea tree oil if you have it, because it really did work wonders for me, plus it did it pretty quickly.

I am so happy I am not the only one with this problem.. I just got mine the other day.. I got my nose pierced in August and it is now September. I had to change the ring prematurely because the stone fell out of the one I got at the piercing shop. After I did that the lil bump formed. it is really grose but hopefully the sea salt soaks will help.

ASPERIN WORKS!!! I had mine done in April, and it got the bump, tried everything, went to the piercer, he told me to use a paste made of crushed asperin and water, leave it on for no less than 30 minutes, wash off well with warm water. Worked like a charm. 2 days later, nothing! I woke up with another one today, and have the paste on right now as I write! Sure hope it works again.

Tea Tree Oil is really good. I had a bump on my eyebrow piercing and a painful red bump that came out of no where on my nose. I used 100% Tea Tree Oil, undiluted and soaked on a Q-tip 3-4 times a day on both eye piercing bump, which has flattened out and is nearly invisible, and the acne bump which is no longer there all within 2 weeks.

will witch hazel oil work?

November 6, 2008 at 2:32 pm
(84) Amanda says:

You shouldn’t use Tea Tree Oil undiluted. Not just because it’s really strong, but because if you put one or two drops in a little bit of water, it will last you twice as long.

But it does work wonders. Not just for piercings, but other things too. I’ve been using Tea Tree Oil for my Industrial percing in my ear for a little over 3 days, and it has already cleared up a keloid, which is scar tissue build up around the piercing.

Keloids are fixable, just remember not to pick at any of it. Replacing your stainless steal ring with PTFE, or flexible jewelry can also reduce the amount of stress on a piercing, allowing you to heal faster. Just remember that you should not put in PTFE until you have had the piercing for atleast 6 weeks (the average amount of healing time for MOST piercings, not all). =]

(95) Mel says:

I have the same problem currently. I got my nose pierced the beginning of September and everything was absolutely perfect! It didn’t hurt when I got it done, it wasn’t red or swollen; I was so happy. About 3 weeks later I had fell asleep with my boyfriend, and he moves around like a maniac in his sleep, so he accidentally pulled it out. Anyways, I eventually got it back in, and that’s when the problem started and I noticed the bump. I tried using sea salt soaks and chamomile compresses but they didn’t make such a difference. It did go down somewhat but didn’t completely go away. I do admit however, I wasn’t so consistent at one point, and did have it pulled a SECOND time by my boyfriend, who is obviously a brute-_-. SO, I finally got annoyed, and picked at it (bad, I know, but I was almost desperate). I pulled off some skin, and it bled quite a lot. I put peroxide and let it dry and then some Neosporin. After this, the bump started to get better and now I’m using Natural Tea Tree Oil. I’m slowly seeing a good improvement, and I’m happy. I clean it every day about 3 times with anti-bacterial soap and warm water, and after apply the Tea Tree Oil. I definitely recommend trying the oil, I have heard from a lot of people it was their answer to get rid of this ugly bump. But, like I said, it’s a slow improvement, so don’t lose faith if it doesn’t work right away !

Good Luck=]

When I get the bump, I usually try to poke it with a needle or squeeze it to try and get whatever is in it out. 99% of the time I find that inside the ball is puss. What do I do about this?

I’ve had my nose pierced since November and have also developed this bump. Mine is quite large and I cant seem to make it go away. I have also , however, been having alot of issues with my stomach so I am hesitant to take any kind of multi-vitamin. Im now starting to use vitamin-e oil and I’ve been thinking about witch hazel but i’m not sure if thats the right thing to use. I need to go to my local piercers. I also have not changed my stud from the origional piercing. I really want a titanium nose ring because the stud gets stuck and pulls when i clean it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey everyone,

I was thinking of getting my nose pierced again and glad I came across this site. When I initially had it done years ago. I too got the bump. However the only thing that worked was to get injections of cortizone put into it. I had to take my piercing out (my bump was probably the size of a small green pea). In total I probably had six injections as nothing else worked. I went to a Dermatologist to get it done. Just wanted to pass that on for anyone that is still having problems – if in fact the bump is “Keloid”. I never had any bleeding or any puss come out. The bump was hard to the touch.

When I first got my nose pierced mine did the same thing for about a month. I put warm water soaks on it for 15 minutes a day and the sea salt soaks 2 times a day and it got much smaller, but did not go away completely. I then put a drop of warm water on my nose and put salt on with a q-tip and left it there overnight and in the morning it was completely gone! Try this if regular sea salts aren’t working. :]

(104) cassie says:

its called a keloid.
it’s just scar tissue.
when a piercing gets infected it over heals itself and this is what happens.
it usually only happens on cartilage piercings.
you can get tea tree oil from GNC and put that on it up to 3 times a day with a q-tip.
i used this and it worked pretty well but it smelled horrible.
so one day i decided to try neosporin, i put it on the keloid every night before i went to bed and that actually worked better for me.

I’ve had it for about 6 months now. And it would go away every now and then, but now it just stays there. Yea, it looks ugly, yea my friends make fun of me, and yea people say it looks like I messed up my nose, and I did, cause when I take the ring out, theres one big black circle on my nose the size of a bead that will now never ever go away. But hey, I chose to get my nose pierced and I’m willing deal with the consequences =/ it helps me a little when I say that to myself. Good luck everyone! (106) sara says:

I had the same bump for about a month and I did a little research on the web to see if I could find out anything…i tried hydrogen peroxiod, which is a bad idea because it kills the healing tissue and makes it take even longer to heal and it can also cause the bumps to form. I then tried neosporin which helped kill the infection, but the ugly bump would not go away….thus I started to search. I came accross a herbal remedy which has worked absolute WONDERS for me. Get some herbal chamomile tea bags…put one tea bag in a little dixie cup and add about 1/8 tsp of sea salt. Add very warm water and let the mixture brew for a few minutes or until it is cool enough that it does not burn your skin. Use the tea bag as a warm compress and just hold it on the piercing and surrounding area for about 15 minutes. Once done toss the tea bag and use a qtip with the normal sea salt water compound to clean around your piercing. Do this 3 to 4 times a day. It worked wonders for me…I was so frustrated and ready to just take the thing out and this was my last resort. I wish I had tried it earlier. My little bump got pretty big…about 2 1/2 mm…after starting this treatment…I could see a noticable difference the next day and within 5 days it was all cleared up….I hope it works for you all!

February 16, 2009 at 4:02 pm
(107) sara says:

BTW…poking it with a needle to drain the puss/infection is a BAD idea. You are just inviting bacteria into your piercing. Not all these bumps are keliods. That is a very common misconception. For most people it is just an infection. A keliod is more of a calcification. If your bump is hard then that is probably what it is, however, if your bump is more of the consistancy of a blister then it is more or less just a bad infection. There are many treatments available and it may take you several different ones to figure out what works for you. Poking, popping, and using a needle are still very bad ideas. Those are all good ways of spreading the infection as well as causing a bigger infection.

So I did some research on the internet, I’m thinkg it might be my nose ring, so I was looking into buying that boflex nose ring thing? Does anyone know if this actually works? I don’t know if thats a good idea but I’m about to start the sea salt soaking today to see if it works.

March 16, 2009 at 7:07 pm
(118) sara says:

maria, definately try the salt soaks first. You can also use sea salt and mix with a drop of water and put the paste like substance on your piercing and let it dry. If it is a new piercing try to aviod changing it unless you find you are allergic to the metal in the nose ring used. Usually your initial nose piercing is completed with a ring from surgical stainless steel and it is very unlikely that you are having an allergic reaction to it. These bumbs are often cause by removing and re-inserting your jewelry to soon. It rips the healing tissue and causes a mild infection, thus the bump. There are many different treatment and something that may work for one may not work for the other. Try the sea salt soaks 3 or 4 times a day and if you have the time and resources use a clean paper towel soaked in water(as hot as you can stand) and hold it on the piercing and surrounding skin as a hot compress for about 10 minutes (or until the towel turns cold) 3 to 4 times a day. Do not touch your piercing in excess and make sure you wash your hands if you have to touch it at all. These methods should definately help but if after about a week you have not noticed any improvement you might try some methods listed above or if you are desperate you can visit your doctor.

I had this problem too after i got my nose piercing.
The best thing to do is wash it with sea salt 2-3 times a day to keep it clean. One thing that PEOPLE FORGET TO DO is after cleaning with sea salt, to rinse with warm water. if you don’t then the salt crystalizes around the piercing and causes irritation and “crusties”.

one other thing i did to get rid of the bump was to use the refining mask from proactive.
it dried out the bump and within a week it was gone.

I have the same problem! I’ve had my nose ring for a little under 2 months. Mine is red and filled with blood(it really looks like flesh popping out my nose! Disgusting I know). And it bleeds when I like move my nose ring when I wash it.

Just a few days ago I started the Sea Salt Soak. They say you want to do 1/4 teaspoon sea salt for 8oz. cup of water. I made it in an empty poland spring water bottle and I heat it up in the microwave for about 15/20 seconds, just checking to make sure its not too hot! I pour some in a small dish(or bowl) and lean over it and soak my nose that way…can be a little annoying. I do that for about 10 minutes. Then I stand over the bathroom sink and pour the sea salt soak over my nose(remember I have it in a water bottle).

Even though I only did it like 3 times I do notice a small difference..and even my niece asked me is my bloody bump gone! Lol.

I have heard you shouldn’t use peroxide or alcohol on it but I’m thinking about putting some alcohol on a cotton swap and then on my nose..just to see if it will dry it out.

SO FRUSTURATING! I have the bump too, it’s a weird flesh colored bump just on the outside on my piercing. I had my nose pierced before for 2 years with an L shaped stud and never had this problem before. I had to take that one out because of work, and decided to get it repierced. My new stud is a screw shape and the healing process was fine up until I woke up with this annoying bump, usually I heal quick so I left it alone. The bump wouldn’t go away, so thinking it was just like a regular zit I tried to pop it.. BIG MISTAKE! The bump got huge red and swollen. I researched all over the internet, and decided to try the salt soaks. The swelling went down, but the bump didn’t go away. I’ve increased the sea salt soaks treaments to twice a day (in the morning and then at night) but the bump is still there! I’m pretty much at my wits in and plan seeing my piercer to maybe upgrade to the Titanium and return to the L shaped stud. I’m going to definitely try out the Asprin paste to the Tea Tree Oil and let you guys know how the results.. Good to know I’m not alone! :)

Such Bumps are common especially when piercing by a novice or an amateur piercer. Make sure you always get piercing done from a body piercer. Sometimes, the body jewelry piece is not clean enough.

Our body then tends to reject the piercing as a foreign element.

Thanks for sharing. Great Advice, Karen!

I took my piercing out and i’ve just been trying to put the piercing through it barely just to make sure it doesn’t close but I don’t think it will because i’ve had it for a few months now.

I just got my nose pierced 2 weeks ago and I have the same bump. It looks kind of like a zit, but kept getting bigger everyday. I have been doing the salt sokes but I was told to try the chamomille tea. I did it last night, when I woke up this morning I did the salt soke and another Chamomille tea bag on my nose. The bump is almost gone already, I just hope it stays gone. Also, you shouldn’t use dial it is harsh on your new skin cells. Just yesterday I started using Dr. Brommer’s Castille Soap (at Whole Food’s). It could be helping too. Hopefully it stays gone!!

I had a huge bump on nose after having my nose pierced for about two months. I made the huge mistake of popping it and it got even bigger and began bleeding. Now I had this huge red monster on my nose. I decided to start using tea tree oil and . . . it actually worked!!! In 4 days the monster that was living on my nose was gone. I would wash my face and then place the oil on my nose with a q-tip, I would do this in the morning and in the evening. I highly recommend it!!!

(142) sara says:

the MOST common cause of this ‘bump’ (about 92% of the time) is from people removing thier piercing or changing thier piercing before it is healed. When your peircing is healing the tissue is extremely sensitive and removing or replacing jewelry when the tissue is still in the stages of healing will rip the healed tissue causing this ‘bump’ the simple solution to resolving this problem is leaving your jewelry in the suggested 6 months before changing. If it is all ready too late for you to do that then you need to put a clean piece of jewelry in the piercing and leave it there, continuing the sea salt soaks until your six months is complete. If you take your jewelry out all together while it is infected you risk locking the infection in the healing tissue causing an even more unsightly mess on your face.

i’ve had my nose peirced for a month and i have a huge bump, i think it started because my nose ring ripped a little, and i think its where it trys to heal, or maybe because i have diabetes, it always bleed when i mess with it.

so, i messed with it and put salt water on it, in the last hour its shrinked half the size, so i hope that did the trick.

it may also be because i changed my ring out before it healed? idk.
but, i got the same problem on my tattoo, as soon as it healed a little dry bump popped up.

I got a bump just like the on e in the picture 3 weeks after having my nose pierced. I tried the salt water compress twice daily for two weeks but it only got worse. I was fed up with the bump and wanted my nose back so I went to the Docs. He prescribed me some anti-biotic lotion to put on it 2-3 times a day. 10 days on and the lump has almost gone. If you’re sick on the lump I’d seriously suggest seeing your doctor for some of this wonderful lotion and reclaim your nose!

If you have a silver ring, take it out! It’s something about silver that agitates the situation. Cleanse the nose w/ anti-bacterial soap like Cetaphil, do the sea salt/aspirin soak 2-3 times day and each time also apply tea tree oil. I got the bump almost 3 mths after my piercing and did this process and kept a surgical steel bone in my nose and by the end of the first day the bump was almost gone! I swear by it.

(153) Haley says:

My nose was pierced about 2 months ago, and a large, red bump appeared underneath my cute little stud about a month after I got it pierced. I tried EVERYTHING I could find online to get rid of it…sea salt soaks, chamomile tea bags, tea tree oil, even antibacterial ointment(which was a BAD idea, btw!). Finally, I tried hydrocortisone cream (1%). I dabbed some over the bump and stud before bed and the bump had gone down SIGNIFICANTLY by the morning. I don’t know how safe it actually is to use a steroid cream on your nose, but I think a doctor would usually give you a steroid shot if you went in to see him/her.

Now the bump has completely disappeared and my cute nose piercing is saved! Try it – 1% hydrocortisone cream.

(154) Christina says:

I had the same problem and what freaked me out was actually talking to the tattoo place because immediately without completely hearing my story they assumed it was a keloid. Finally when I told them that it couldn’t be a keloid and that my nose piercing was already 3 weeks old and my boyfriend accidently bumped my nose the piercer told me to clean with the H20 like i had already had been doing and then crush up aspirin and add water to it to make a paste once a day for no more then 15 mins. Well that didn’t work and I started to get desperate because it has already been almost a week with no improvement. So two days ago I bought the tea tree oil and started applying and noting was happening. then last night i got this brilliant idea. I cut out a tiny square from a baby wipe dipped it in tea tree oil and left it on my nose overnight. I woke up this morning and voila!! nose bump has gone down a whole bunch!!! I def. recommend the tea tree oil!!!!

I had the problem with the bump on my nose ring, too. I was cleaning it and doing the sea salt soaks but I still got a bump!I read that if you leave the sea salt on the bump it would help (although many will say that it will irritate it more) and I saw a difference after ONE day. I did this for a week and there is no bump anymore. Of course, I still clean it with antibacterial soap and do the routine sea salt soaks, but leaving the salt on the bump as long as I could was the best!

Tea tree oil worked really well for me. II’ve had my piercing about 6 months and it will occasionally start to form a small lump beside it. So it’s me again…….
I woke up a few minutes ago and went to the bathroom to check on the red bump..I had put that Tea Tree Oil on the bump ONLY, I didn’t drown my piercing wit the stuff….and wow, I am not lying, it as honestly shrunk like half the size. Before my bump was just a tad bigger than my nose stud and was bright red and seemed to be vry puffy, (& like an idiot i tried poking it with a needle too…DO NOT DO THAT PLEASE),….however, when i look at it now,…it’s not as red or puffy so yay!!! :)
First…I cleaned it with my H20cean spray that I purchased at some local piercing/tattoo shop and when that has completely dried up, I took a q-tip and soaked it with the tea tree oil…the smell is fuckin horrible…SOO BAD that i now have a sore throat from breathing out of my nose….wtf? has this happened to anyone before??? Thankfully I had a cough drop but now I dont have anymore!!!! I was wondering where the hell did my sore throat come from last nght…i was assuming I might be getting sick sinc its flu season, but neehh…its the stupid smell…it’s really strong, so be careful!

(173) sara says:

Rachael…..usually when you get that black dot it is from using sterling silver jewelry. There is really nothing you can put on it to make it go away. They generally fade a bit over time, but I am sorry to say you may still be stuck with a permit reminder of your piercing.
For everyone else who keeps asking why this bump appears: A) why dont you read the postings above you and B) stop removing your jewelry too soon. Everyone wants to wear the cute jewelry, but in not waiting to change it until the suggested 6 month period of time is over, you are doing more harm than you realize. You run the risk of tearing the OPEN WOUND while it is in the healing process. Once you do this you have opened it back up and the bacteria that enters the now open again wound is what causes this bump. DO EXACTLY WHAT YOUR PIERCER TELLS YOU TO AND WAIT THE SUGGESTED SIX MONTHS TO CHANGE YOUR NOSE RING. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. I have seen so many people come through my shop that just refuse to listen.

I don’t really recommend it…as it was painful..and it took a really long time to do. I am slightly worried now after reading all of these comments about getting this “red bump thing”. I am using a Q-tip to clean it with the solution you get for aftercare from ear-piercing. I will buy the sea salt next time I am at the store. I am thinking about also using an anti-bacterial ointment or anti-bacterial soap as another preventative. Maybe I should just take it out and forget about it…how many other 40 yr. olds (or older) have nose piercings? Any advice or suggestions? thanks.. : )

(178) Angelee says:

Alright, ready for a completely different idea? I had The Bump for several weeks. Eventually it became infected (swollen, red, painful and pus-filled), and none of the “normal” remedies were doing it for me. Sea salt made it feel better for a minute or two but caused a huge amount of dry skin and crust. Then, I remembered that when I had my (clitoral) hood pierced years ago my piercer did not give me sea salt to clean it with, but instead said that urine is an antiseptic to your own body, so just going pee would keep it clean. So I tried it with my nose. That’s right… I’ve been applying my own urine to my nose piercing. For A DAY AND A HALF now. And not only is the soreness gone but the bump is almost entirely vanished, with nearly no dry skin, pus or crust. Seriously, it is a miracle. You might think it’s gross to apply your pee to your face, but how grossed out are you when you look at that bump in the mirror, and how embarrassed are you to be seen with it in public? This is amazing, and much a much milder experience than you might expect.
How I do it: I keep a small cup in the bathroom, and just catch a little bit every time I go to the bathroom. Then I soak a cotton ball in it, squeeze out the excess and apply for about two or three minutes. Sometimes I’ll soak a Q-tip also and apply it to the inside of my nostril at the same time for maximum immersion. When I’m done I wash my hands, pat the piercing dry with a clean towel, and I’m good to go.
It’s been less than two days, folks. Give this a try if you’re sick of trying remedies that don’t work or are taking too long for you to stand.

February 7, 2010 at 7:24 pm
(182) Josie says:

So I got my first nose piercing when I was 16 and it started getting infected because I had to keep taking it out because of school. I decided to take it out before it got too gross. I got it done again after high school and a few weeks later it got the dreaded “bump” it was extremely gross and I went to a local piercer and they said that whoever did it, did not do it properly. It was at a weird angel and it was putting too much pressure so scar tissue started to build up. I took it out yet again. I let it heal completely and once it did, I got it done again on the opposite side this time. It was fine and I had no problems. Then one day my bird tried to get my nose ring (hoop) and I pulled away, BAD IDEA. It didn’t bleed or hurt, but that is why I believe I got the “bump” again. It is significantly smaller than the one I got with the “gone wrong piercing” or the one I got when I was 16. My friends say that it is not noticeable, until I point it out. But I know it’s there and it bothers be a lot. I hate it! ): I have read all your comments and I’m going to try every last remedy, I really don’t want to have to take it out, again. I really love it and I am going to try everything!

I just did a 15 min hot compress with a chamomile tea bag that I brewed in hot water and some sea salt and it made the redness go away! I will also be trying out the tea tree oil. I will most definitely post my results after a few days of doing these hot chamomile/sea salt compresses!

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to tell my story, maybe it will help in some way…

(183) Michelle says:

Wow. I wish I would have come across this about 2 hours ago, before I went in my bathroom and picked the crap out of my bump! I got my piercing the first week of December, and it seemed to be healing fine. I did notice a bump above the piercing but was hoping it would just go away. Then my daughter snagged the stud. That took a couple weeks to heal. I accidentally yanked the stud out via bath towel about a week or so ago. I’ve actually tried to pick the bump before because it kinda has a look to it like it had a little white stuff in it. I have a terrible propensity to pick at stuff–sick I know. I wash it everyday, and I’ve used sea salt soaks(only once a day for a minute or two) on the area to help with healing the trauma that seems to hit it. It looked like it was healing okay, then the bump started to show up again. Irritating. So a couple hours ago I decided to pull the stud out and go to work on it. I now have a red, picked spot at my piercing. I soaked it in sea salt water then iced it to make it stop bleeding. I then put the stud back in. I have a bump on the inside of my nose too. I’m not so sure I can take much more drama with this thing, I’m going to give it a few weeks to heal up using more consistent sea salt soaks and see how it goes. Glad to know I’m not the only one with this issue, but am I the only one dumb enough to pick at it?! LOL I may add the warm compresses and tea tree oil I’ve read about. I’ll definitely be checking back here!

Okay, so almost a week later, the scab is gone and there is no bump on the outside of my nose. It looks like there is a bump still on the inside where the piercing goes through. I used sea salt water 3 times a day and washed it like normal with face soap or anti bac soap. Never mind the fact it got yanked out twice more this week! lol Anyway, I’m keeping an eye on it to see if the bump is going to try to come back. I think I’m going to continue to soak it once or twice a day in sea salt water this next week and see how it goes. And see if I can get rid of the one on the inside. I’ll update.

another thing you guys can do is crush up aspirin and make it into a paste. Then leave it on your piercing for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off. Do this once a day until the bump goes away.

You can also do this with any piercing it’s helped all my friends. :)

hey guys. I got my tragus done 2 months ago and i got the bump, my friend went to doctors and they said to crush up disprin and make it into a paste so i tried that and it didn’t work. I’ve tried popping it but it made it worse. & then i went back to where i got it pierced and they told me to use green tea bags, so i have been using them twice a day, soaking it for about 5 minutes each time but it started working. Now it is starting to throb like a tooth ache but in my teagus.. It hurts when i touch it at all and the lump is getting bigger. I have no idea what to do now. They also recomended lavender oil, should i try this or what should i do? I need answers it hurts so bad.

my beautician recommended hydrogen peroxide 6% which you can buy at chemists. I’ve had my nose pierced 2 times now and the stuff works wonderfully. You will find it may go white and eventually fall off or you can peel it off. It may sting a little at first but certainly does the trick if u use it 2 times a day. Just be patient

Well, mine was cleared up about a week ago, then I could tell that ever so slightly it was starting to come back in a slightly lower spot. I have been soaking it in sea salt water once a day the last few days. A couple days ago it once again started to have that white-head pimple look. I try not to touch it, cause when I do the whole thing turns red like a blood blister with pressure. I’ve left a tiny bit of salt on it the last two nights and it now looks like a pretty ripe pimple. I don’t want to touch it though. I’m hoping if i keep a little salt on it and keep soaking it that maybe it will draw out the puss looking stuff and dry up. I have to say I don’t think I would have gotten it pierced if I knew about the bump issue. I wonder now if the bump would actually come back without the piercing there. And it’s pretty obvious that there is no one fix for everyone, so we’re all pretty much experimenting with our piercings trying to find out what works, which is pretty frustrating. :(

My nose piercing would do the SAME thing. So my piercer told me to do this which you will from now on consider your “miracle cure” for infected piercings:

1. Take 1 tablespoon of Pure Tea Tree oil (I got mine from trader joes for about $5)
2. pour in 1 tablespoons of purified water
3. soak a q-tip with the solution
4. clean your piercing with it 4-5 times a day
5. dont fidget with your piercing! :)

My infection cleared up in 3 or 4 days. :)
Good luck!

Here’s my experience w/ the bump 1 1/2 month into the healing process…

I knocked it halfway out while sleeping, rushed to bathroom mirror to ease it back in and went to sleep…Woke up w/ irritated nose and a day later a small bump appears slightly below the opening of the piercing…I panicked…began my research on how to get rid of it and here’s what I did:

- soaked in sea salt solution (no changes)
- wet q-tip and dipped in sea salt, applied a few grains directly on bump (no changes, and irritated skin a little)
- took a sewing needle, burned tip w/ a lighter, and poked it in several spots on the bump (no changes, not even blood came out)

Here’s what worked for me (and, I’d like to mention that I am of African descent because what I did could cause damage to certain types of skin):

I took a small container, filled it w/ water, stuck it in the microwave until it was hot (visible steam), added sea salt, and stuck my entire nose inside to soak until the water turned lukewarm….dumped the water and repeated it 2 more times. My nose was little red afterward and I saw a bit of mucus around the opening of the piercing, but I think it was snot seeping through the piercing. I cleaned it up with a q-tip and applied Bactine…repeated these steps for the next 4 days reducing the length of the soak and the number of soaks each time….And the bump is gone! Each day I did this I saw a difference and that’s the only reason I continued doing it. I’d like to add this very important step that everyone should do to prevent knocking the stud: TAKE A VERY SMALL PIECE OF COTTON BALL, PLACE IT OVER THE STUD, AND APPLY TAPE ACROSS TO SECURE IT …that prevents knocking the stud or accidentally scratching the your nose while in the healing process…this should really help people who have a habit of touching their face : )

Good luck!

i am a 40 year old responsible mama who had my nose pierced for about 3 weeks when it was yanked by my youngest childy by accident. ug. the dreaded red bump started the next day. a week later it was getting bigger and bigger …tried sss, and teatree oil no success.
started to have a bit of yellowish pus, and didn’t want to fool around with ‘home remedies’ any longer.
i’m not a pill popper by any means, but i wanted this dealt with QUICKLY.
so, i went to my doc and got a prescription for cephalexin (500mg 4xday/7 days)
i’m on day two, the red is GONE, and it’s already starting to ‘peel off’.
not touching it other than the Qtip saline swab 3X day.
keeping it dry.
i really didn’t want to take it out.
good luck all.

I got my nose pierced in india and had a similar problem!.. And I got the red bump, too…
Basically, you have to do a hot compression (not too hot, you don’t want to irritate it) on the bump twice daily, clean it with sea salt and water only!! do not use alcohol or any other harsh chemicals, and make a paste out of turmeric powder and coconut oil and apply it on the bump 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks. You’ll see a difference in 2 days and the bump will dry up and disappear quickly!..
good luck!

I am glad to know that I am not the only one with this prob. I got my nose pierced about 5 weeks ago and everything was great until 3 weeks ago. It started out looking like a pimple and gradually got bigger. Then I mad the mistake of trying to pop it and now the bump is hard and it looks just gross. My nose ring does not look cute with this monstrosity on it!! I went to my piercer to get my monroe changed and asked him about my nose. He asked me if I messed with my nose piercing a lot and I told him yes and he said to leave it alone and it would go away. That was almost 2 weeks ago and its still freakin here! I bought some sea salt and I am trying that for now. I would post a pic but I won’t put ya’ll through that lol.

Okay, so an update. I had the bump come back twice since my last posting. Both times it got to the point of looking like a serious whitehead that needed to be popped. I kept soaking it, and would put a little salt on it for a few minutes. Eventually both times it started to leak and would start to diminish. This last time, when it looked like the soaks weren’t getting rid of it completely, i decided just to wash it a couple times a day with the regular antibacterial soap I was using when I initially got it pierced. So far, it has kept it at bay for about a couple of weeks. Hopefully this takes care of it completely. HOPEFULLY!!!

ive had my nose pierce for about 2 months and my bump showed up….i cant really see the picture but my bump was really red and visibly noticeable. This is what worked for me and hopefully it will for u too…

-i get a small cup and fill it with hot tap water, and add the sea salt (shouldnt be saltier than tears)
i dip the side of the nose with the bump in the cup for about 5 min.

-i suggest using the 100% tea tree oil so youre nose wouldnt dry up.. dip a q-tip with tea tree oil in a new cup of water/salt. you can also leave flakes of sea salt on it to drain any puss or blood. i leave it on for 1-2 min. (optional)

-do this about twice- three times a day ( usually when i wake up and before i sleep)

-and then at night i crush up an aspirin until it becomes a paste and put it on the infected area overnight..(aspirin decreases the swelling)

ive only done it for 2 days now and its size has gone down tremendously and its no longer as red and visible.

I hope this works for u =)

Okay so it’s been almost three months since I had my nose peirced and after I finished working out I looked in the mirror and saw this gross thing! Smart me thought it was a pimple so I went to pop it finding out that it only took the skin off and caused it to bleed. After I freaked out a bit and took out my stud I looked online and thought it was a sist until I saw this site. I soaked it with hot water and cotton balls for about 20min then pasted on sea salt. Once it started to dry I rinsed it with very warm water and continued to soak it. After I was done I put PURE ALOE VERA (the 100% gel kind) and it’s only been 5hours and the bump is almost all the way gone!! However it’s still red from when I tore of skin, wasn’t a smart thing to do. But for sure the hot water, sea salt, and aloe Vera. Btw, aloe Vera is good for your skin all over it even clears your skin when it comes to acne as well as acne scars or redness, just a helpfull beauty hint :)

I put it back in and the next morning I had a dried blood spot next to my piercing from where i popped it. I was reading on her what I should do…One person said i they pinched off the skin with tweezers, since you can’t feel anything….so i soaked my tweezers in alcohol and pinched it off…. it’s gone, i’ve been cleaning it with alcohol and peroxide…after cleaning it i spray two sprays of neosporin on it….i’ve done this for 2 days and it’s pretty much gone…it sounds crazy but it has worked thus far. So NONE of this homeopathic bull s&#$ worked for my wife.

Anyone notice how zit-like it is?

Hydrogen Peroxide is the devil.

Benzoyl Peroxide is the active ingredient in Proactiv and its’ numerous copies. The thing Proactiv does is force you to Clean, Dry, and Moisturize. In that, they stck a 2.5% solution of Benzoyl Peroxide to essentially “insert” oxygen into the anaerobic bacteria in zits.

Benzoyl Peroxide is the most effective treatment there is if used with a Proactiv-like regimen. The problem is that Americans LOOOVE MAXIMUM STRENGTH. As a result, only Neutrogena has a stand-alone 2.5% solution available in retail. Every other major retail product is an extremely harsh 10% solution which also do not provide mousturisation. This is the problem.

My wife used the 2.5% lotion in both the Neutrogena and the Acne Free Proactiv copies as well as the stand-alone from Neutrogena (On The Spot). THEY ALL WORK. EVERY TIME.
The end.

So, I’ll try the lotion Eric mentioned. I’m just over this.

I have a bump on the inside of my nose too and I’m seriously thinking the outter bump is due to that being infected on the inside? But, you can’t clean the inside too???

I’m tired of trying to get rid of this. Not to mention so over the Tea Tree Oil smell :O UGH! I get my hopes up and then it comes back again. Part of me wondered if the bar was bent weird and not sitting in my nose properly and causing it to be inflamed but I don’t think so.

I’m 34 so I’m old enough to know what in the heck I’m doing and able to follow instructions but I’m over this. It’s cute but not with a big ole blister like bump next to it :O

(238) Jo says:

I got my nose pierced around 3 months ago and made the mistake of changing the nose piercing a few weeks later. A month into the piercing, I gained a pretty severe bump. I tried the remedy of sea salt and a week later, it left.

Today, the bump appeared in the middle of the day. the reason for the bump this time was because my piercing got caught in something. I knew the bump would come soon because I was receiving quite some pain the last couple of days. So today, when the HUGE bump appeared, I was unsurprised but still devastated. It was completely embarrassing to talk to anybody.

I went home and looked up different ways to rid the bump. Here was what I tried. I iced my bump for a while so the swelling would go down. Then I did the sea salt method. Afterward, i took a shower and let the warm water seep onto my piercing. Then I crushed an advil and coated onto my piercing. As you can see, I was quite desperate to rid the bump!

SoI have been feeling my bump every now and then. And there was some sort of pus coming out, and this was even more frightening to me. I quickly went and washed it with some more sea salt mix.

Then I checked my reflection in the mirror, and the bump has enormously improved in appearance. I am so happy!! I have no idea which method I tried did the trick. But, I am happy whichever one did it. I hope that tomorrow, it will improve even more. Right now, the bump is barely there whereas a couple of hours ago, it was more than twice as large than my piercing.

Try the ice, aspirin, shower, or sea salt, or all. It worked on me! And remember this all happened in one day.

What that is, is in fact a keloid. I got one on my cartilage because I switched the piercing before it healed and put in cheap jewelry. In some cases keloids, if not caught early can become permanent and actually grow. The best way to avoid keloids are to wait the proper amount of time before switching a piercing and for piercings outside of the ears, it is always safe to stick with surgical grade materials.

If you do get a keloid, or think you have developed one its a good idea to talk to either a doctor or dermatologist who can take a look at it.

I have my dimples peirced and had them for 5 years, recently i developed “the bubble” above both of them bigger on my left cheek. A peircer at a local studio told me to take camamille tea bags, sea salt and make tea. Take the hot tea bags on place them on my cheeks for 15 minutes twice a day for 2 weeks, its been 4 days and seems to be working greatly. The right bubble is gone and the left seems to be shrinking. Ive popped them before doing the tea bags and they just got bigger. Hope this helps and good luck

Seriously, and without a doubt use the Tea Tree Oil. It truly is a miracle worker. It works for so many other things. Don’t doubt it. It works in like a week if you’re consistent. 3-4 times daily. But don’t use a cotton ball. It dries up your skin and you peel which is not fun because you already have this huge thing on your face…

Anyways. Use it <3 its great.

Okay, listen. I’ve had “the bump” on every single piercing I’ve had. Wash your hands! If you can pop it without actually popping it like a zit, do so. Get the nasty stuff out. Then clean it three times a day, morning, noon, and night. After cleaning it put some kind of neosporen on it, and do it with a q-tip. Do not touch it otherwise. Also, in the shower use some kind of bar soap to wash the area, but be gentle. Try to leave the piercing alone as much as you can so it will heal all the way, believe me it’s the only way to go.

Okay sooo ii qot my nose piereced on October 28th, 2010 for my 16th bday. Soo after a month or so the “bump” came. It was qross and ii decided ta pop iidd wiidd ah needle. BAD IDEA blood was everywhere and it was gross so ii searched the internet and ii decided ta do the sea salt soaks. It did work for a few months, but the bump keeps coming back. I would take a cup of water and 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt and boil it and use a Q-tip and clean it for about 5 minutes or so twice a day. It does work but it keeps coming back. Also please be careful wen cleaning it because ii accidently burned my nose nd now ii have thise scar buht iidds healing so hopefully it will qo away in ah month or so. Right now ii have this very small bump near my nose ring and reading all the comments about tea tree oil ii think im gonna actually try it. For right now im gonna do my sea salt soaks because im used to iidd nd iidd works for a while until ii get the tea tree oil. OMG im sooo glad im nawt the only one with this problem. The bumb is really small right now and you cnt really see iidd buht ii knoe its there and it bothers me. Sea salt soaks work buht it causes my nose to flake and look really dry. Buht ii guess thats waht iidds supposed ta do. Eventually ii was able to jus pick the bump off liikee iidd was a scabe buht iidd wnt stop coming back so ii think im qonna mix sum tea tree oil into my daily nose cleansing. Lets see how it goes !!!!

I am wondering if this bump is caused by ladies makeup/brush or pad that is used to apply the makeup (has tons of bacteria)……. My tattoo guy that pierced mine, says he tells ladies to avoid the area with the piercing with makeup (especially cheaper brands like cover girl or mayballene) I use a talc free kind by Jane Iradale, and I also avoid the area…. So far no bump. Oh and I also clean my brush once a week to prevent bacteria build up on my brush. Hopefully this helps someone.
