Question of the Week - Bump On Piercing

Sunday March 19, 2006
nosebumpblog.jpgQ: I have a question about my nose piercing. I got it under 2 months ago. Anyways, now around my nose piercing on the outside, it's swollen and looks absolutely disgusting! Its like a big bump around the nose on the outside. This swollen area doesn't really hurt or anything but it's simply gross. I didn't have this bump before - but i think I got this bump because I kept on changing the actual piercing - I'm not exactly sure if this is the exact cause. I wanted to know if anyone knows the solution to this problem...HOW CAN I GET RID OF THIS NASTY BUMP and WHY IS IT THERE???

A: No need to panic...this is very common. But you will need to do a few things.

First, you need to put in a quality surgical stainless steel, niobium or titanium CBR in the piercing but do not do it yourself. Buy the jewelry at your professional piercing studio (tattoo/piercing shop, NOT Claire's or Piercing Pagoda) and they will help you find the right size and put it in for you for free. Then, you will need to leave your CBR in for several weeks - no changing the jewelry until it is completely healed. Second, you need to clean your piercing properly and do about 3 sea salt soaks every day until the bump is completely gone. Cleansing and sea salt soak instructions are here: http://tattoo.about.com/cs/beginners/l/blpiercingtlc.htm Once your piercing is completely healed, you can change the jewelry - again, use high quality jewelry only from a professional shop and let them put it in for you so you don't accidentally damage anything in the process. Good luck to you - I'm sure your piercing will be just fine. My nose did exactly the same thing and this happens all the time. If at any time it becomes infected - painful, red, hot, pussing green ooze - then you need to see a doctor. Otherwise, these instructions should help you heal up just fine.

(5) Lisa says:

I’d like to say that I wouldn’t attempt to pick anything.. The worse thing (In some cases) could cause Infentigo.. or a bigger infection. I barely have an immune system at all so I have to be careful of what I do. I recommend calling your local “Licensed” body piercer to find out what is wrong and what do they think is best for use.

I have this same problem. I used sea salt crushed into warm water and it’s getting a lot better.

(6) Jenn says:

I had that with my nose piercing as well. I called the piercer and they called it a keloid which is just your body reacting to the new piercing. I have had mine done it will be a year in July and I have not had another issue with it.

(12) em says:

I had one too. I was cleaning it with salt water (and often) and then I read that salt water is way too strong and that you shouldn’t even clean it with anything; your body can heal itself. So i stopped cleaning it or touching it at all and it went away completely

(17) Chloe says:

i had my nose done a few years ago now, i really like it until a few weks into the healing process it got this lump, it looked realy ugly and sat just beside the stud. i went back to the place i had it done, and she told me its a very common blood filled lump called a ‘Granuloma’ (GRAN-U-LO-MA)
She told me that the small alcohol wipes (the ones they wipe the nose with first to remove germs and residue) would work by drying it out. sure enough, i used these 3 times a day and it got smaller and smaller, untill 1 day it dropped off.

(33) Corey says:

I heard that you DONT use tea tree oil and stuff like that because if you dont miss it correctly then it can actually burn the skin.

i have the same bump and it comes and goes, and goes and comes. it annoys me but I use sea salt water. I guess it kind of works

January 22, 2008 at 11:59 pm
(34) gia says:

its really common with nose piercings to get those bumps. i have my nose pierced on both sides and the bumps come and go on each side. dont use tea tree oil. if you think the sea salt soaks dry out your skin, tea tree oil is a nightmare. ive tried h2ocean, ripping it off, its going to keep coming back if you play with your jewelry, or take it out too much. i know its gross when it gets crusty, but dont twist it around! leave it or use a qtip with cold water to clean it. and if you just HAVE to take it out and cant stand the bump till it goes away on its own, take it out for a little bit. do a hot sea salt compress, or a hot chamomile tea compress. do that 2 or 3 times a day for ten minutes. but DONT leave your piercing out for like more than an hour or it will start to close up. hope that works for some of you.

here’s something else you can try. might work i have no idea

(36) marc says:

I have a bump too. It’s not only on my outside of my nose but inside too. I’ve had the piercing for about a month. I Don’t know hat to do!! And I certainly don’t want to hear “I told you so!” From my mother!!!!! HELP!

February 10, 2008 at 1:51 pm
(37) Aimee says:

Hey, don’t worry about the bump, it’s nothing serious. It’s called granuloma and is nothing more than a bit of scar tissue. I have the same thing on my nose and what I’ve found that is helping are hot compresses. You just heat water up to as hot as you can take it comfortably (anymore and you’ll burn it and that wouldn’t help) and then take a cloth and soak it in there and apply it to your nose for about 5-15 minutes. I recommend using bottled water because it IS cleaner than tap. Also, cleaning twice a day (once in the morning, once before bedtime) with a sea salt solution (500 mL of water to 1/4 sea salt) and a single drop of slightly diluted tea tree oil once or twice a week should help it clear up. If you find the skin around your nose starts drying and flaking, stop using the tea tree oil because that means it’s drying the area out and your piercing needs moisture. Good luck, I hope yours goes away; mine’s getting there.

(44) Jillian says:

TEA TREE OIL!!!
WORKS MAGIC I PROMISE YOU!!!

Use at night, soak a q-tip, and I mean dripping soak, get it all around the piercing, not the inside though…

it will peel away. my bump was larger than my actual piercing, so it took like a week, but most people have reported 3 days.

Try it out, Australian Tea Tree Oil.

(47) Melissa says:

I’ve seriously had the same problem.
My bump looks bloody red though and it’s small, and everyone says they can’t notice it, but I DO!!
it’s so annoying. my mom keeps telling me it’s a zit, and i don’t think it is, because it’s seriously right next to the hole. and I’ve been trying sea salt soaks, and it isn’t working.
so I might try the tree oil crap.
But idk man.
everyones telling me it’s a zit. and it’s not.
it doesn’t look like one, nor feel like one.
it’s just weird looking. and i want it gone SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(57) diana says:

I had my nose pierced a couple years ago and a couple months in I got this kind of bump that wouldn’t go away so I took the piercing out because it kept getting bigger (and sea salts soaks weren’t doing anything). But this year I got it re-done. It’s been almost 6 months with no problems, but a few days ago I got bad allergies and the bump appeared! Ahh! So this time I broke down and bought tea tree oil at my local Walgreens. I have been using it for 2 days now and the bump is almost gone! Amazing stuff and I don’t mind the smell (it reminds me of my painting supplies).
Here’s what I do: gently wash the piercing with mild soap and warm water. Then with a q-tip, apply only a small bit to the bump. Do not over saturate it because it will get IN the hole and that’s not the best. Also, do NOT get it in the inside of your nose. I apply it once when I wake up and once before I go to bed. But you might want to start with just once before bed to see how sensitive you are to it. If you have sensitive skin it will dry it out badly.

(59) Jennifer says:

ok I got rid of mine after 2 months of trying everything…This is how I did it… Went to a tattoo and peircing place they removed the stud and put a hoop (ring) and said it will stop the top of the stud from bumping it. Then they told me to get BC or Goodies asprin powder and mix it with 100% tea tree oil to make a toothpaste like paste…apply it to the “bump” and leave it there for 15-20 min and then with warm water wipe it of and apply a little bit of the tea tree oil and within a week it will be gone. And well mine was gone in 2 days but he told me to do it for 7-10 days…Do it it works!!!

(60) jesica says:

Sure enough i have the bump also. I got mine back in march and it did not start acting up untill my stud went thru and i had to shove it back thru to the outside. I tride the soaks and it did not work. Eventually i popped it with a needle and it came back smaller and i popped it again. now i am using vitamin e oil. it has not came back so hopefully it is gone!! glad im not the only one ;)

(61) Natalie says:

I had my nose pierced 2 years ago, things went well for the first few months then pooff a gross bump formed. My piercer said to just do like I was doing and clean it with sea salt soaks. 2 months later the bump was still there and so I decided to take my nose ring out. About 3 weeks ago I decided to get it redone hoping I wouldn’t have any problems. A week ago the bump came back, I had gotten H2Ocean spray and provon so I didn’t know why it was there! Turns out my body was having a bad reaction to sea salt and it was causing more problems then helping. I read this website and decided to try the BC asprin and tea tree oil paste, after 2 days my bump was gone! It seriously works wonders and to anyone having this problem I say give it a try!

(62) Jondon says:

(64) KT says:

I had a red bump next to my nose ring and i freaked out! WORD OF ADVICE *DO NOT TAKE NOSE RING OUT*. I made that mistake and it was painful putting it back in. Anyways i went to the place i had gotten it peirced and they told me to do sea salt water soaks where you heat up some water poor in sea salt and use q-tips or a paper towel and soak the bump. Also, the guy told me a trick to do. He said to crunch up advil and coat it over the bump like a past (water then put advil) and leave it over night. After a week it was looking better and then i decided to juse treat it like a blimish and i used face cream on it and now it is completely gone! NO scar or anything! thank god!

Ok…I had this and the answer is short but not too sweet! Everyone I’m sure has noticed that this bump does not present any pain. So, I simply took a pair of toe nail clippers and snipped it off! Didn’t hurt a bit.

I woke up with a nasty bump the other day, it was bigger then the stud and red and shiny. I read everything I could find online and decided to try a couple things. First I put hydrogen peroxide on a cotton ball and left it on for a few mintues followed by another cotton ball soaked in sea salt and hot water. After using the cotton ball I poured the sea salt water over my nose and that was it. I did this twice in one day and by the next day the bump was half the size it had been and is still going down.

aww man I have one too and its so disgusting I hate it!! lol but I’m going to try the sea salt soak 3 times daily and hopefully it will go away soon! :) I just wanted to say too that I learned you have to make sure the salt is natural sea salt (no ionized) (so no table salt) or else its going to sting!

(74) hatty says:

Hey guys, my bump came around two months after I had my nose pierced, it looked EXACTLY like the one in the photo. I must admit I just kind of burst it and squeezed it (eww) but of course it came straight back. Anyway, I got some tea tree oil, not really expecting it to work, but it really has done the trick! It only took about three days and now it’s totally gone! I can wear a little stud again rather than the huge on I’d been wearing to cover the gross bump. If it does return I guess I’ll do the same process again, but I certain recommend at least trying the tea tree oil if you have it, because it really did work wonders for me, plus it did it pretty quickly.

I am so happy I am not the only one with this problem.. I just got mine the other day.. I got my nose pierced in August and it is now September. I had to change the ring prematurely because the stone fell out of the one I got at the piercing shop. After I did that the lil bump formed. it is really grose but hopefully the sea salt soaks will help.

ASPERIN WORKS!!! I had mine done in April, and it got the bump, tried everything, went to the piercer, he told me to use a paste made of crushed asperin and water, leave it on for no less than 30 minutes, wash off well with warm water. Worked like a charm. 2 days later, nothing! I woke up with another one today, and have the paste on right now as I write! Sure hope it works again.

Tea Tree Oil is really good. I had a bump on my eyebrow piercing and a painful red bump that came out of no where on my nose. I used 100% Tea Tree Oil, undiluted and soaked on a Q-tip 3-4 times a day on both eye piercing bump, which has flattened out and is nearly invisible, and the acne bump which is no longer there all within 2 weeks.

(82) Amanda says:

You shouldn’t use Tea Tree Oil undiluted. Not just because it’s really strong, but because if you put one or two drops in a little bit of water, it will last you twice as long.

But it does work wonders. Not just for piercings, but other things too. I’ve been using Tea Tree Oil for my Industrial percing in my ear for a little over 3 days, and it has already cleared up a keloid, which is scar tissue build up around the piercing.

Keloids are fixable, just remember not to pick at any of it. Replacing your stainless steal ring with PTFE, or flexible jewelry can also reduce the amount of stress on a piercing, allowing you to heal faster. Just remember that you should not put in PTFE until you have had the piercing for atleast 6 weeks (the average amount of healing time for MOST piercings, not all). =]

I got my nose pierced in March, and like 2 weeks later a big red bump formed. I didn’t really do much until a month after i got it pierced, when I changed the piercing. (93) Mel says:

I have the same problem currently. I got my nose pierced the beginning of September and everything was absolutely perfect! It didn’t hurt when I got it done, it wasn’t red or swollen; I was so happy. About 3 weeks later I had fell asleep with my boyfriend, and he moves around like a maniac in his sleep, so he accidentally pulled it out. Anyways, I eventually got it back in, and that’s when the problem started and I noticed the bump. I tried using sea salt soaks and chamomile compresses but they didn’t make such a difference. It did go down somewhat but didn’t completely go away. I do admit however, I wasn’t so consistent at one point, and did have it pulled a SECOND time by my boyfriend, who is obviously a brute-_-. SO, I finally got annoyed, and picked at it (bad, I know, but I was almost desperate). I pulled off some skin, and it bled quite a lot. I put peroxide and let it dry and then some Neosporin. After this, the bump started to get better and now I’m using Natural Tea Tree Oil. I’m slowly seeing a good improvement, and I’m happy. I clean it every day about 3 times with anti-bacterial soap and warm water, and after apply the Tea Tree Oil. I definitely recommend trying the oil, I have heard from a lot of people it was their answer to get rid of this ugly bump. But, like I said, it’s a slow improvement, so don’t lose faith if it doesn’t work right away !

Good Luck=]

I clean my nosering and I use the sea salt or alcohol when I clean it. When I get the bump, I usually try to poke it with a needle or squeeze it to try and get whatever is in it out. 99% of the time I find that inside the ball is puss. What do I do about this?

I’ve had my nose pierced since November and have also developed this bump. Mine is quite large and I cant seem to make it go away. I’ve been using sea salt and an anti-bacterial soap as well as sea salt hot pack, which seem to relieve it but it never goes away. I have also , however, been having alot of issues with my stomach so I am hesitant to take any kind of multi-vitamin. Im now starting to use vitamin-e oil and I’ve been thinking about witch hazel but i’m not sure if thats the right thing to use. I need to go to my local piercers. I also have not changed my stud from the origional piercing. I really want a titanium nose ring because the stud gets stuck and pulls when i clean it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey everyone,

I was thinking of getting my nose pierced again and glad I came across this site. When I initially had it done years ago. I too got the bump. However the only thing that worked was to get injections of cortizone put into it. I had to take my piercing out (my bump was probably the size of a small green pea). In total I probably had six injections as nothing else worked. I went to a Dermatologist to get it done. Just wanted to pass that on for anyone that is still having problems – if in fact the bump is “Keloid”. I never had any bleeding or any puss come out. The bump was hard to the touch.

When I first got my nose pierced mine did the same thing for about a month. I put warm water soaks on it for 15 minutes a day and the sea salt soaks 2 times a day and it got much smaller, but did not go away completely. I then put a drop of warm water on my nose and put salt on with a q-tip and left it there overnight and in the morning it was completely gone! Try this if regular sea salts aren’t working. :]

I’ve had the bump for about 3 months now, and this has really worked!!

(102) cassie says:

its called a keloid.
it’s just scar tissue.
when a piercing gets infected it over heals itself and this is what happens.
it usually only happens on cartilage piercings.
you can get tea tree oil from GNC and put that on it up to 3 times a day with a q-tip.
i used this and it worked pretty well but it smelled horrible.
so one day i decided to try neosporin, i put it on the keloid every night before i went to bed and that actually worked better for me.

I’ve had it for about 6 months now. And it would go away every now and then, but now it just stays there. Yea, it looks ugly, yea my friends make fun of me, and yea people say it looks like I messed up my nose, and I did, cause when I take the ring out, theres one big black circle on my nose the size of a bead that will now never ever go away. But hey, I chose to get my nose pierced and I’m willing deal with the consequences =/ it helps me a little when I say that to myself. Good luck everyone! If you ever find a permanent cure, even if it is going to the doctor or makeup, let me know!!!

(104) sara says:

I had the same bump for about a month and I did a little research on the web to see if I could find out anything…i tried hydrogen peroxiod, which is a bad idea because it kills the healing tissue and makes it take even longer to heal and it can also cause the bumps to form. I then tried neosporin which helped kill the infection, but the ugly bump would not go away….thus I started to search. I came accross a herbal remedy which has worked absolute WONDERS for me. Get some herbal chamomile tea bags…put one tea bag in a little dixie cup and add about 1/8 tsp of sea salt. Add very warm water and let the mixture brew for a few minutes or until it is cool enough that it does not burn your skin. Use the tea bag as a warm compress and just hold it on the piercing and surrounding area for about 15 minutes. Once done toss the tea bag and use a qtip with the normal sea salt water compound to clean around your piercing. Do this 3 to 4 times a day. It worked wonders for me…I was so frustrated and ready to just take the thing out and this was my last resort. I wish I had tried it earlier. My little bump got pretty big…about 2 1/2 mm…after starting this treatment…I could see a noticable difference the next day and within 5 days it was all cleared up….I hope it works for you all!

February 16, 2009 at 4:02 pm
(105) sara says:

BTW…poking it with a needle to drain the puss/infection is a BAD idea. You are just inviting bacteria into your piercing. Not all these bumps are keliods. That is a very common misconception. For most people it is just an infection. A keliod is more of a calcification. If your bump is hard then that is probably what it is, however, if your bump is more of the consistancy of a blister then it is more or less just a bad infection. There are many treatments available and it may take you several different ones to figure out what works for you. Poking, popping, and using a needle are still very bad ideas. Those are all good ways of spreading the infection as well as causing a bigger infection.

I have the exact same problem, but it doesn’t hurt. My piercer told me to clean the nose piercing with dial soap and I did. The bump appeared and I’ve tried asprin and the swelling went down a bit, I tried tree tea oil, nothing. So I did some research on the internet, I’m thinkg it might be my nose ring, so I was looking into buying that boflex nose ring thing? Does anyone know if this actually works? I don’t know if thats a good idea but I’m about to start the sea salt soaking today to see if it works.

March 16, 2009 at 7:07 pm
(116) sara says:

maria, definately try the salt soaks first. You can also use sea salt and mix with a drop of water and put the paste like substance on your piercing and let it dry. If it is a new piercing try to aviod changing it unless you find you are allergic to the metal in the nose ring used. Usually your initial nose piercing is completed with a ring from surgical stainless steel and it is very unlikely that you are having an allergic reaction to it. These bumbs are often cause by removing and re-inserting your jewelry to soon. It rips the healing tissue and causes a mild infection, thus the bump. There are many different treatment and something that may work for one may not work for the other. Try the sea salt soaks 3 or 4 times a day and if you have the time and resources use a clean paper towel soaked in water(as hot as you can stand) and hold it on the piercing and surrounding skin as a hot compress for about 10 minutes (or until the towel turns cold) 3 to 4 times a day. Do not touch your piercing in excess and make sure you wash your hands if you have to touch it at all. These methods should definately help but if after about a week you have not noticed any improvement you might try some methods listed above or if you are desperate you can visit your doctor.

I had this problem too after i got my nose piercing.
The best thing to do is wash it with sea salt 2-3 times a day to keep it clean. One thing that PEOPLE FORGET TO DO is after cleaning with sea salt, to rinse with warm water. if you don’t then the salt crystalizes around the piercing and causes irritation and “crusties”.

one other thing i did to get rid of the bump was to use the refining mask from proactive.
it dried out the bump and within a week it was gone.

I have the same problem! I’ve had my nose ring for a little under 2 months. Mine is red and filled with blood(it really looks like flesh popping out my nose! Disgusting I know). And it bleeds when I like move my nose ring when I wash it.

Just a few days ago I started the Sea Salt Soak. They say you want to do 1/4 teaspoon sea salt for 8oz. cup of water. I made it in an empty poland spring water bottle and I heat it up in the microwave for about 15/20 seconds, just checking to make sure its not too hot! I pour some in a small dish(or bowl) and lean over it and soak my nose that way…can be a little annoying. I do that for about 10 minutes. Then I stand over the bathroom sink and pour the sea salt soak over my nose(remember I have it in a water bottle).

Even though I only did it like 3 times I do notice a small difference..and even my niece asked me is my bloody bump gone! Lol.

I have heard you shouldn’t use peroxide or alcohol on it but I’m thinking about putting some alcohol on a cotton swap and then on my nose..just to see if it will dry it out.

THEN IT CAME BACK AROUND DECEMBER AGAIN. HAVE IN MIND THAT BY THIS TIME, IVE GONE THROUGH 3-4 BOTTLES OF H2OCEAN (SEA SALT SPRAY FOR PIERCINGS). THE BUMP WENT FROM LIGHT PINK TO BRIGHT RED. I POPPED IT MANY TIMES, I USED BACTINE, TEA TREE OIL, ASPIRIN PASTE, ALCOHOL, CHAMOMILE BAG COMPRESSIONS AND IT WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS AND CAME BACK AT THE END OF FEBRUARY OF 2009. TODAY I AM STILL STRUGGLING WITH THE BUMP. THE WORST THING YOU COULD DO IS POP IT SO DONT DO IT! ANYWAYS I PRETTY MUCH DONT USE ANYTHING ANYMORE ONLY WARM WATER COMPRESSIONS AND A TINY DROP OF ASPIRIN MIXED WITH TEA TREE OIL AND THE BUMP IS ALMOST FLAT. HOPEFULLY IT GOES DOWN AND LEAVES FOREVER BECAUSE IT’S A STRUGGLE AND I DONT WANT TO TAKE IT OUT. ANYWAYS I HOPE YOU GUYS HAVE LUCK IN MAKIN IT GO AWAY. I HOPE MINE NEVER COMES BACK IF NOT ILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE DAMN PIERCING. BY THE WAY MY BUMP HAS NEVER BEEN PAINFUL!
BYE GUYS.

(128) Chanel says:

SO FRUSTURATING! I have the bump too, it’s a weird flesh colored bump just on the outside on my piercing. I had my nose pierced before for 2 years with an L shaped stud and never had this problem before. I had to take that one out because of work, and decided to get it repierced. My new stud is a screw shape and the healing process was fine up until I woke up with this annoying bump, usually I heal quick so I left it alone. The bump wouldn’t go away, so thinking it was just like a regular zit I tried to pop it.. BIG MISTAKE! The bump got huge red and swollen. I researched all over the internet, and decided to try the salt soaks. The swelling went down, but the bump didn’t go away. I’ve increased the sea salt soaks treaments to twice a day (in the morning and then at night) but the bump is still there! I’m pretty much at my wits in and plan seeing my piercer to maybe upgrade to the Titanium and return to the L shaped stud. I’m going to definitely try out the Asprin paste to the Tea Tree Oil and let you guys know how the results.. Good to know I’m not alone! :)

(132) Dave Johnson says:

Such Bumps are common especially when piercing by a novice or an amateur piercer. Make sure you always get piercing done from a body piercer. Sometimes, the body jewelry piece is not clean enough.

Our body then tends to reject the piercing as a foreign element.

Thanks for sharing. Great Advice, Karen!

I was told that Virgin olive oil with garlic works wonders.. they said they tried everything else when they had the bump and then they tried the olive oil and it worked! The garlic is a must, thats the trick. Im going to buy it tmrw because I am so tired of this bump.. I took my piercing out and i’ve just been trying to put the piercing through it barely just to make sure it doesn’t close but I don’t think it will because i’ve had it for a few months now.

I just got my nose pierced 2 weeks ago and I have the same bump. It looks kind of like a zit, but kept getting bigger everyday. I have been doing the salt sokes but I was told to try the chamomille tea. I did it last night, when I woke up this morning I did the salt soke and another Chamomille tea bag on my nose. The bump is almost gone already, I just hope it stays gone. Also, you shouldn’t use dial it is harsh on your new skin cells. Just yesterday I started using Dr. Brommer’s Castille Soap (at Whole Food’s). It could be helping too. Hopefully it stays gone!!

(139) Goodbye monster! says:

I had a huge bump on nose after having my nose pierced for about two months. I made the huge mistake of popping it and it got even bigger and began bleeding. Now I had this huge red monster on my nose. I decided to start using tea tree oil and . . . it actually worked!!! In 4 days the monster that was living on my nose was gone. I would wash my face and then place the oil on my nose with a q-tip, I would do this in the morning and in the evening. I highly recommend it!!!

(140) sara says:

the MOST common cause of this ‘bump’ (about 92% of the time) is from people removing thier piercing or changing thier piercing before it is healed. When your peircing is healing the tissue is extremely sensitive and removing or replacing jewelry when the tissue is still in the stages of healing will rip the healed tissue causing this ‘bump’ the simple solution to resolving this problem is leaving your jewelry in the suggested 6 months before changing. If it is all ready too late for you to do that then you need to put a clean piece of jewelry in the piercing and leave it there, continuing the sea salt soaks until your six months is complete. If you take your jewelry out all together while it is infected you risk locking the infection in the healing tissue causing an even more unsightly mess on your face.

i’ve had my nose peirced for a month and i have a huge bump, i think it started because my nose ring ripped a little, and i think its where it trys to heal, or maybe because i have diabetes, it always bleed when i mess with it.

so, i messed with it and put salt water on it, in the last hour its shrinked half the size, so i hope that did the trick.

it may also be because i changed my ring out before it healed? idk.
but, i got the same problem on my tattoo, as soon as it healed a little dry bump popped up.

I got a bump just like the on e in the picture 3 weeks after having my nose pierced. I tried the salt water compress twice daily for two weeks but it only got worse. I was fed up with the bump and wanted my nose back so I went to the Docs. He prescribed me some anti-biotic lotion to put on it 2-3 times a day. 10 days on and the lump has almost gone. If you’re sick on the lump I’d seriously suggest seeing your doctor for some of this wonderful lotion and reclaim your nose!

If you have a silver ring, take it out! It’s something about silver that agitates the situation. Cleanse the nose w/ anti-bacterial soap like Cetaphil, do the sea salt/aspirin soak 2-3 times day and each time also apply tea tree oil. I got the bump almost 3 mths after my piercing and did this process and kept a surgical steel bone in my nose and by the end of the first day the bump was almost gone! I swear by it.

(151) Haley says:

My nose was pierced about 2 months ago, and a large, red bump appeared underneath my cute little stud about a month after I got it pierced. I tried EVERYTHING I could find online to get rid of it…sea salt soaks, chamomile tea bags, tea tree oil, even antibacterial ointment(which was a BAD idea, btw!). Finally, I tried hydrocortisone cream (1%). I dabbed some over the bump and stud before bed and the bump had gone down SIGNIFICANTLY by the morning. I don’t know how safe it actually is to use a steroid cream on your nose, but I think a doctor would usually give you a steroid shot if you went in to see him/her.

Now the bump has completely disappeared and my cute nose piercing is saved! Try it – 1% hydrocortisone cream.

(152) Christina says:

I had the same problem and what freaked me out was actually talking to the tattoo place because immediately without completely hearing my story they assumed it was a keloid. Finally when I told them that it couldn’t be a keloid and that my nose piercing was already 3 weeks old and my boyfriend accidently bumped my nose the piercer told me to clean with the H20 like i had already had been doing and then crush up aspirin and add water to it to make a paste once a day for no more then 15 mins. Well that didn’t work and I started to get desperate because it has already been almost a week with no improvement. So two days ago I bought the tea tree oil and started applying and noting was happening. then last night i got this brilliant idea. I cut out a tiny square from a baby wipe dipped it in tea tree oil and left it on my nose overnight. I woke up this morning and voila!! nose bump has gone down a whole bunch!!! I def. recommend the tea tree oil!!!!

(159) Iliana says:

I had the problem with the bump on my nose ring, too. I was cleaning it and doing the sea salt soaks but I still got a bump!I read that if you leave the sea salt on the bump it would help (although many will say that it will irritate it more) and I saw a difference after ONE day. I did this for a week and there is no bump anymore. Of course, I still clean it with antibacterial soap and do the routine sea salt soaks, but leaving the salt on the bump as long as I could was the best!

(160) Caitlin says:

Tea tree oil worked really well for me. II’ve had my piercing about 6 months and it will occasionally start to form a small lump beside it. The bump is never really red or sore, it’s just there and looks bad. I put tea tree oil on a cotton swap and rub it over the piercinig and the lump is gown within a day or two. I have pretty sensitive skin but the tea tree oil has never caused any skin irritation.

Okay, well I took my nose ring out about a year ago now, and I still have a black little dot on my nose, which kind of looks like a scar. I cover it up with make-up, but its really annoying. I had the same bump problem as everyone else so i decided to take it out. I was highly disappointed since it was ridiculously cute. I still have the scar on my nose and a scar tissue bump on the inside of my nose. So if you take it out, clean it well and maybe talk to a professional. There’s no getting rid of scars.

I got mine done around August 20th, and my bump just formed about a week or so ago. It started with puss, and now this red bump has formed around my nose stud. So, to put my nose stud in, it has to go through the bump. :| Idk what to do. Ive used antibacterial soap, the stuff the lady told me to use, alcohol. Everything. Please help me. Its so gross looking. In the middle, it looks like the skin from the inside is ripped and like, sticking out. Idk. Its horrible. It bleeds too. Please help me. Seriously, I cant take this… :(

Dear April,
Are you touching it? Peeling and whatnot? If so, please STOP TOUCHING IT,
I know, I have a habit of touching it for no reason, but obviously only bad comes from it. I developed a lil dump on the side of my nose piercing…but i went to walgreens and bought this Jasons Tea Tree Oil for 10 bucks. I just put it on and gross,…smells like chemicals all over the place haha :P but hopefully it works …

So it’s me again…….
I woke up a few minutes ago and went to the bathroom to check on the red bump..I had put that Tea Tree Oil on the bump ONLY, I didn’t drown my piercing wit the stuff….and wow, I am not lying, it as honestly shrunk like half the size. Before my bump was just a tad bigger than my nose stud and was bright red and seemed to be vry puffy, (& like an idiot i tried poking it with a needle too…DO NOT DO THAT PLEASE),….however, when i look at it now,…it’s not as red or puffy so yay!!! :)
First…I cleaned it with my H20cean spray that I purchased at some local piercing/tattoo shop and when that has completely dried up, I took a q-tip and soaked it with the tea tree oil…the smell is fuckin horrible…SOO BAD that i now have a sore throat from breathing out of my nose….wtf? has this happened to anyone before??? Thankfully I had a cough drop but now I dont have anymore!!!! I was wondering where the hell did my sore throat come from last nght…i was assuming I might be getting sick sinc its flu season, but neehh…its the stupid smell…it’s really strong, so be careful!
