The legalizing of tattoos in South Carolina might cause some confusion for folks now wanting to get inked there. What you need to know, first of all, is that even though the trade has been legalized, that doesn't mean just anyone can start tattooing or open up a shop. A shop still has to be approved and licensed before the state will recognize it as a legal tattooing establishment.
To that end, a man has already been arrested for illegal tattooing after it was legalized. He did not have a permit from the state, he was tattooing minors, and two people tested positive for Staph infections after receiving tattoos from him.
This should serve as a warning to be sure that if you're wanting to get a tattoo in South Carolina, it is only legal if it is in a state or city permitted establishment and follows all the rules under the new legalization law. One such shop - Body Art Ink Tattoos on Seaboard St - just opened up in Myrtle Beach and celebrated inking the first legal tattoo in the state on March 28, 2006.
