Question of the Week: Tattoos on Feet

Sunday July 2, 2006
Q: "What do you think about tattoos on feet? I have heard that many places do not guarantee them, but I can't find out why. If you could shed some light on the subject that would be great. I am getting two religious [tattoos] on my legs from the tops of my feet to just under my knee. If it matters, the tattoos I want on my feet would be black ink and be some sort of cross symbol." -KN

A: I actually wrote an article a few years ago on why many artists won't tattoo feet. Please refer to Tattoos: No Hands, No Feet, No Face – Why?

That all being said, I think foot tattoos are great and I plan to get mine done, too. But it's just going to take finding the right artist to do it and then it's totally up to you to take really good care of it. You also have to realize that no matter what you do, it may fade or wear down faster than the rest of your tattoos (up your legs) so you may need to get your foot touched up every couple of years to keep the brightness matching with the rest of it.

Hey I am a artist and read the news everyday I receive these message, by the way Karen, great job your doing posting great and important information about tattoos for people to read and become educated! I try to educate daily, some simply do not listen, oh well their loose. I do feet tattoos and have never had a problem doing them, yes they sting a bit like any tattoo done on the softer skin, but I have some tattoo pictures that I can show off to anyone interested, from hummy birds on the top of the foot to simple flowers and ribbons, I have no problems putting a tattoo on anyones foot and of course I quarantee all of my work done at my shop, as there is normally a fading process that comes with tattooing this area, and of course if the “inked” individual does not take care of this one during the healing process then it usually will require some type(s) of touch-up and/or follow-up ink.

I was actually considering going in today to speak to a local tattoo artist about getting a tattoo on my foot. After reading this article though i am a little bit afraid. I have always wanted a foot tattoo, but i never thought it would take 3 months of being bare foot for it to heal. My ignorance i suppose, but i had assumed it would have been a much shorter time, as my friends did not have to worry about their pants rubbing on their tattoos at all. Now i worry, as there is no possible way for me to not wear shoes for 3 months, as i work.
Did i read that wrong? or should i really be considering finding a new location for this tattoo?

I plan on having two tattoos on each of my hands later on in life. I read the article, but I want them so bad, Im willing to risk it. I dont think it will be that bad, as I heal fast, and will go for required touch ups when needed.
