In the News: Teacher Fired for Showing Tattoos Online

By October 14, 2007

Follow me on:

Virginia Carter, a substitute teacher for West Florida High School was recently fired for sharing photos of her tattoos on a personal blog page. Although the superintendent is quoted as saying the photos were not pornographic and she did nothing legally wrong, they fired her anyway because the photo of her tattoo also displayed her "bare back."

While I think it is extremely childish on the part of the superintendent to let Carter go for showing no more than she would in a bathing suit, someone else is actually behind this because the school received a package from an unknown source in regards to Ms. Carter and her photographs, which is what started the investigation. This whole thing has been blown way out of proportion, and frankly I hope Ms. Carter takes action against the school for such an obvious case of discrimination.

West Florida teacher gets canned for having Tattoos? That’s what she gets for not having a union job!

This is a perfect example of drawing conclusions without having the facts. Are you aware of the captions that went along with the photos, the remarks made by her students on the site, or the sexual innuendo presented there? No one is against the tattoos; no one cares whether or not she is covered head to toe with them.

What this issue is about is the inappropriate presentation of a MySpace page that was not only accuessible to minors, but her students more specifically her students.

Don’t be so paranoid!

This is EXACTLY why substitute teachers nationwide need to organize and start a union. This is bull. Substitute teachers are the ONLY people that work in education that dont have a union.
