Red Ink, Red Bumps
"I've had my tattoo for about a month now and 2 days ago [I noticed] bumps everywhere in the red part of my tattoo. It is pretty hot, would it be possible I'm getting these bumps because of the heat? I've never had direct sunlight in my tattoo as far as I know. I've got a picture of it. I went to the artist today and he said it was the sun and the weather, but maybe there could be something more to it?" - krayzii66

Spouse Doesn't Like Tattoos
"Anyone have suggestions on how to handle a spouse who is very upset with his wife getting TWO tattoos? It is more the content than the actual tattoos?" - Stix61

Well, the way it looks, it just looks to me like a mild rash, but emphasized by the red ink. Although, red ink having the highest concentration of iron sometimes causes an allergic reaction in some cases. You can go to a dermatologist and find out exactly what the cause is, but I can probably guarntee you it isn’t the sun.

I’ve seen a similar reaction to Red pigments in the past. I would go see a Dermatologist just to be on the safe side. Let us know what the prognosis is. john’s right, it’s not the sun.

Red and Yellow are most common for allergic reactions. See a doctor and they’ll get you an antibiotic. Your probably allergic to red pigments.

Yeah I think you are allergic to the ink because I am and thats what happens to me when red dye or any form of pink dye comes into direct contact with my skin.

yea man, those are nothing more than big ol zits. everytime i get another piece of my sleeve done, they shave my hairy arm, do the tat, and right around the 5th or 6th day, as the hair begins to grow back, i too get these big ol painful bumps under my skin, wherever the ink is.
and not just the red ink either.
also, although i try not to use any kind of ointment or lotion during the healing process, after the thing starts to get flaky looking, i tend to put hand lotion on it if im going out somewhere. and that only plugs the poors up even more, and creates more places for the hair to ingrow and for pimps to grow under the skin.
dont pick em, dont poke em with a needle to release the pressure.
just wash up with a bar of soap several times a day, keep the lotions off, and they will heal up as the hair grows back.
good luck

I have the same trouble with one of tats. I’ve had the tat for a yr now and recently learned that sunlight CAN cause a reaction in tattoo ink. Its usually with yellows but it can happen with any color. Try Aveeno Hydrocortisone. It works better then the hydrocortisones out there.

i would say it’s not an infection caused by a dirty needle as the tattooist would have used the same mag shader to do the black & green & they both look fine. i would go with a reaction with the red ink. it will take 3 times as long to heal & be itchy but in the end as long as you don’t scratch it & the artist is good there souldn’t be any scaring. if it does need a touch up, go back to the tattooist but insist on a different brand of ink. if he used, say intenze get him to use starbright. he shouldn’t charge for a touch up.
