Forum Discussions: Work Dress Codes and Unreliable Artists

Wal-Mart Dress Code / Body Art Policy
"This is a quote from the Wal*Mart Dress Code Policy as of February 23, 2008.
Jewelry/Tattoos
-Facial jewelry is not allowed. Clear, flat, plastic spacers are allowed for the tongue only. Covering facial jewelry with a band-aid is not permitted.
-Earrings must be conservative in nature and not pose a safety risk.
-Tattoos that are offensive or distractive are to be covered by clothing or other means.

Who is the one who judges whether a tattoo is either offensive or distractive? But that isn't my main argument or complaint. I have a problem with the no facial jewelry bit. I personally have 5 tattoos right now and hopefully more to come, but I also have facial piercings. My lip and tongue are pierced. Now, I have yet to use a "spacer", I call it a retainer, in my tongue cause no one at my store has noticed that my tongue is pierced. My problem is with the lip. I tried using a band-aid my first week there, didn't know the policy at the time, and that didn't go over too well, so then I started using a retainer. Only two other Wal*Mart associates have noticed it, but one was looking and for some reason I was smiling at the other person. I just recently shortened it so that it hopefully isn't anywhere near as noticeable. But no customer has said anything or complained about it so I don't see what the big deal is." - Lhyz_Bunny

Unprofessional & Unreliable Tattoo Artist
"My artist and I did a design together (for a few months) and he already etched out the design on my arm (it's a half sleeve). It's been since Feb and he always has something "come up". i drove all the way to Nashua (50 miles plus) and he wasn't there. Called to asked him what was up..... he was 'in a zone as he made coffee at 7 eleven and locked himself out'. Other times his excuses weren't as detailed but I'm so frustrated I'm about to give up on him. he told me to call set up an appointment this Mon. Did that, got blown off. Tried Tues. Totally blown off. Nothing pisses off an artist more that letting another artist work on 'their' work. My friends told me to just get another artist but it's our design and I paid him. I don't want to be a bitch to him but as I write this I'm starting to think he deserves it." - spdrgrl

RE: Walmart…you want to play in their house it is by their rules. Simple enough. Find a job with someone with more open thinking! Hot Topics is hiring! People think we are old farts when we advise against certain placements of tattoos and piercings….no, we just know that to live and function in the real world some things just aren’t gonna fly. It’s one thing to be idealistic it’s another to deal with the real world. Life ain’t fair…yeah yeah.

For the tattooer who keeps having excuses…BLOW HIM OFF. If he doesn’t respect you and your time enough he sure doesn’t deserve your skin! There are too many tattooers out there to put up with this!
Maybe when he is sittin’ around with nothing but his coffee cup he will realize he is not the rock star he thinks he is. Give your hide to someone who respects it and YOU!

I realize that you worked out your design with THAT artist and that you already PAID him! Call his shop ask for your $$ back for the portion that is unfinished and find a respectable and respectful artist that will work WITH you! good luck ink friend.
