Forum Discussion - No Clothes Rule?

Sunday July 27, 2008
"A lot of people who have gotten tattoos at work, generally have to keep clothes off the tat so that it can heal and not be rubbed on. I'm getting my first tattoo soon but most likely I will get it on my chest or back, places I need to wear clothes on. Is the no clothes thing true? and if so how long do I have to keep it like that?" - HrtlessJekka

I never heard of that. Ive gotten multiple tattoos, and always wore clothes over it after. Never had a problem, and the artist never told me otherwise.

I try to not wear any clothing over the tattoo for the first week. However, if you do need to wear clthing, just make sure that it is as loosefitting as possible.

Clothing is fine. Here are some tips:
Don’t put cling wrap over the tattoo to keep your clothes from touching it. This just keeps air from getting to the skin and can impede the healing process.
Try to wear a breathable material. Also try to wear something loose.
Do NOT wear anything that is fuzzy, like a sweater. Especially if you get a tattoo on your back. Fuzz is very difficult to pick out of a partially healed tattoo. Plus it can cause irratation if it does end up healing into the tattoo.
Also you dont want anything rough that will sting when you move and it robs against your tattoo. (personally I’ve found just a cotton tee shirt is the best to wear).
Thats pretty much it. When you get home from places you have to wear clothes, try to remove that clothing item and give the tattoo some air.

What I did before getting a tattoo on my back was go to the thrift store and buy a bunch of nice looking, soft, washed-many-times button-up shirts. I got fairly busy patterns, so if the ink happened to weep on the fabric it wouldn’t be too noticeable. And of course if you only pay $3 for a shirt to begin with, it’s no big deal to just toss it out if it gets permanently stained.

You do want the button-up kind because they are a LOT easier to deal with than trying to pull something on and off over your head.
