Forum Discussion - Aftercare on a Tattoo You Can't Reach

Sunday August 3, 2008
"I will be getting a backpiece tattoo. My only concern is its treatment during the healing process. I live by myself, so putting the lotion/ointment on will be a problem.

I asked this question about a year ago, and it was suggested getting a handheld mirror, spatula, turn with the back facing a bathroom mirror and look into the handheld mirror to apply the ointment/lotion with the spatula that way. Will the spatula be sanitary enough? I do not have the equipment at home to sterilize it, but can wash it with hot water and antibacterial soap.

The artist, who is a friend of mine (I am considered to be one of the gang there) offered to let me come into the shop and someone there can help put on the ointment/lotion. especially since there is a new type he wants be to use for this, but I would feel guilty about imposing on them like this." - Lloyd

If you are one “of the gang” and want to be a valuable team member then let them try the new ointment on you, let them monitor your healing, and don’t worry about not being double jointed- it’s not a sign of weakness! Seriously what problem is there in letting the professionals in on the process from beginning to end?

As a professional artist, I would appreciate a client stopping by to make sure his/her tattoo is doing fine, and if they needed help with the care of it, I would want to make sure my art work healed well the first time. I would not feel bothered, or imposed upon. Now if you want your back shaved, or pimples popped….please see you loved one for that. Otherwise, if I did your tattoo and you need my help caring for it please feel free to stop on in for the help, whether your one of the gang or not. We’ve got more room for more gang members. Have a great evening!

Kid
