Should Pets Be Allowed in the Tattoo Shop?

Sunday August 10, 2008
I love animals. The picture you see here is my big ball of fluff, Julius. We also have a cat, a hedgehog and a fish at home. So if anyone would be a supporter of having animals in the tattoo studio, it would be me. I know some shops have their four-legged or feathered friends greet their clients and many of them enjoy being welcomed by a wagging tail or a squawking hello. But is it really a good idea to have pets in the shop, or should they be left at home?

Some jurisdictions allow pets in the common areas (outside the work area) but with few exceptions (fish?) pets do not belong anywhere in a tattoo shop. Aside from the hygiene issues of having pets in a tattoo shop, and the legal restrictions (often banning them from the work area) there is the issue of clients who are allergic to dog/cat hair and or feathers, and dander actually sticks to the walls, so it’s safe to assume that it ends up just about everywhere! Exceptions may be made for “seeing eye” dogs while working but check with your local department of Health first to make sure that they understand how the Americans with disabilities act applies in these special cases.

Hi, I have 12 dogs (we do dog rescues), so I am a dog lover….but I would never get a tattoo in a shop that had any animals allowed in. Pet dander is invisible-but it can cause huge problems in skin healing. If the shop allowed animals, you have to wonder what else they were allowing…….Lesley
