Forum: Playing a Wind Instrument with a Tongue Piercing

Sunday October 26, 2008
cdollface writes: "hey so I want to get my tongue pierced. my only dilemma (besides figuring out a way to ask my mom) is that I play saxophone. Would I still be ok to play my instrument with the tongue ring in? I am willing to wear a simple clear retainer to play if that would make it easier. Also, most of my friends and my sister don't like tongue piercings, but i think they are really cute. Should I just ignore what they say and do what i want? thanks!"

Well, although I am not too much into the piercing, I will stay with the ink under my skin, I did play saxaphone for many years. I have many friends that have the tounge pierced and I guess I would ask what it would be like to have the reid of the instrument vibrating against the jewlery as you play. I would think it would get in the way plus would drive you crazy with it vibrating against the jewlery all the time. Just my thoughts.

I play the clarinet and during my senior yr I got my tongue pierced. I always left it in while playing and it didn’t make a difference. I also was 1st chair and the band director never questioned me. Of course there are some contradictions as far as placement. I have a longer tongue so it was never in the way. If you have a shorter tongue, it’s possible it may be a problem, but when you “tongue” while playing it’s w/ the tip and the tip of the tongue is usually not pierced. I would recommend going to see a body piercer to see what you’re placement options are. If the piercing is placed close to the tip, there will also be a higher risk for damaging your teeth. If you do decide to have your tongue pierced, I would also recommend having it pierced when you have a few days off or on the wkend since the majority of the swelling takes place during the first 3 days of having the piercing. I played after having the piercing for 3 days; there was minimal swelling left, but I was able to still play well. Good Luck!

Hi guys,

I am new to this forum tattoo.wpadmin.about.com and hope that somebody can
give me an advice on the forex – I am looking for an introduction
for noobs. I have already a little knowledge about shares. (Hope this is the fitting category.)

Help is so much appreciated. Most important question: can a noob make money on the forex market?

Thanks,
Jim
