Forum Discussion: Learning to Tattoo the Right Way

From Karen L. Hudson, About.com Guide   September 5, 2010

In response to a post about tattoo kits, another member, patriciorip, replied with the following words of wisdom:

"I'm not a pro, just a simple guy, but one thing I've learned about the tattoo world: the tattoo (or piercing) career is based on apprenticeship. When you want to be a doctor, you go to the university... and when you want to be a tattoo artist you go get an apprenticeship. This is how it works, no wanna be doctor goes to the shop and buy a scalpel, a surgical mask and a stethoscope and starts opening people.

"The tattoo kits sellers know very well this reality and also know there's so many people out there who ignore it (or want to ignore it). So, they pack a pitiful tattoo machine with some other s&!ts and sell them for a penny. You end up with a lousy machine (and no practice), ruining peoples' skin and giving a bad reputation to the tattoo art.

"If you have a skilled artistic side (not with a machine but with a simple pencil) you can go get an apprenticeship, learn how to tattoo and where to buy a real good machine and supplies.

"I hope this gives you the idea. If you want to be a tattoo artist go and develop your artistic side first."
