In the News: Why Does American Idol Hide Carly's Husband, Facial Tattoos?

Sunday April 6, 2008
American Idol Taking Stab at Smithson's Tattoos?
Todd Smithson, husband of AI top contestant Carly Smithson, says he's his wife's biggest fan. Carly herself wears a beautiful sleeve tattoo and hasn't been shy about showing her artwork during her Idol stint. But while other contestant's families are always shown, week after week, waving and with smiling faces, Carly's husband has only been shown twice - and both times he was in the shadows, apparently to make his facial tattoos less visible. Why? Does American Idol discriminate, or are they doing it to protect Carly, assuming that America will be the ones to discriminate and vote unfairly?

Based on some of the nasty comments I've seen on some forums about Carly's artwork, I think it may be the latter. It's amazing how small-minded people can focus so completely on a picture and completely miss the person wearing it, because they are so blinded by their own prejudice. Frankly, I feel sorry for people like that. Kudos to Todd Smithson for being there to support his wife, no matter what other people say - that's the kind of love this world needs more of.

(1) Paul says:

Over the last few months, I think Carly has proven that she can be a very entertaining performer. Jesus Christ Superstar was one of the highlights of the evening earlier this week.

And I’m glad that Todd Smithson was there to support her. You’d hope that her spouse would be her biggest fan.

However, I never voted for her … for one reason, and you know what it is. You may think it’s beautiful. But I don’t. You may think it’s art. But I don’t.

I don’t think I ever voted unfairly. My support went to the performers that I most enjoyed. My votes were always cast for those singers that I thought I would actually buy a CD from (and did indeed download from iTunes).

There’s nothing unfair about the way I voted.

If this was just a radio show, I might have focused solely on the music. But it isn’t. It’s TV, and all of a sudden the whole visual aspect becomes critical.

I believe that Carly, Todd, and anybody else, has the right to decorate their bodies with tattoos, purple hair, and/or rings through their noses. But I also have the right not to have to look at it.

I don’t consider myself small-minded at all. Nor am I blinded by own prudice. I think I’m rather objective.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. And if I don’t like it, I’m not buying it.
