Experience - Mai's "Monroe" Piercing and Advice

Experience - Mai's "Monroe" Piercing and Advice

By Karen L. Hudson, About.com

I've got my navel pierced and recently I got a "Monroe", which is a piercing where Marilyn Monroe had a beauty mark on her upper lip. Both piercings made me feel good about myself, beautiful even.

I would strongly encourage people who are thinking about getting a piercing to do it, but be very careful. Please read guidelines that detail what a responsible piercer is and what to look for. I read another post that said they went to a piercer that doesn't card. That is a huge red light, a big warning sign of an irresponsible piercer. A responsible piercer will be confident, knowledgeable, sober, clean and a list of other things. Pay the extra money to go to a good place! You don't want a bad piercing that will cause you problems.

Tho' some people get piercings and tattoos to rebel, and that's good and well, there are some things to be said. First of all, both can be dangerous. I spoke with a nurse once who told me there is a good chance of getting hepatitis from tattoos (even though she had some) because of the repetitive piercing of the skin with a needle that may become contaminated in the process. Again, always choose your artist carefully.

As well, the history of tattoos comes from tribal cultures. These are beautiful peoples and their traditions are worth looking into. The Polynesians tattoo their men as a rite of passage into adulthood. They never do it to piss off their parents. Likewise, it is suggested and in my opinion an excellent idea to consult one's parents before getting a tat done.

Many people may not feel spiritual about their tattoos like the Polynesians, but those that are motivated by those ancient traditions, especially with the resurgence of tribal tattoos as of late, really ought to look into the customs and consult with family members so it is a positive experience for all involved. If it were me, I would opt to get my tat done in the traditional style, using wooden tools. It hurts one hell of a lot more but to me it would be that much more authentic. Good luck!
