Glossary Definition - Tattoo Machine

By Karen L. Hudson, About.com

Definition: An electric powered device used to embed ink into the skin and create a tattoo.

A tattoo machine is an object that is held in high esteem by the artists that use them, and it is considered an insult to the art to refer to a tattoo machine as a "gun."

Also Known As: gun (incorrect), iron
Examples: The tattoo machine is basically the very same since it was first designed. Coils send an electric current through the machine, causing the needles to move in and up-and-down motion at a very fast pace. This electric current is regulated by a power supply, and the machine is then turned on and off through the use of a foot pedal.
