A Legend In His Own Time - Page 2

I asked the tattoo artist when he walked in the door if he minded if I took pictures while he worked. He said he didn't mind at all, and as he got started, I explained who I was to him, and he looked at me a little confused and said, "Do you know who I am?" He handed me his card and said his name was Gill Montie - and yes, I am ashamed to admit that the name just didn't ring a bell with me.(Hey, I'm new to this. I saw my first real tattoo only 2 years ago) Then he asked if I had ever heard of the Inkslinger's Ball. Well, of course I had! He said, "That's my show!" As the discussion progressed, I realized that I was standing before a legend, and didn't even know it. Imagine my embarassment!
He had a copy of the March 2000 Skin and Ink Magazine brought in for me to see the article they had just printed on last year's Inkslinger's Ball. That was when I realized that the adorable little baby I had seen when we came in was his grandson, Vincent. Mr. Montie also handed me a video tape he had just received that day from the American Museum of Natural History, which just opened a Body Art exhibit last November. He received a private screening from the museum, as he has been immortalized there among the exhibits with other greats such as Lyle Tuttle and Don Ed Hardy. He hadn't had time yet to view the videotape, but rest assured it was likely a very positive tribute to his life and work.
