So, you're going on vacation and you want to get a tattoo while you're there. I don't blame you! There are so many great artists out there, why limit yourself to your hometown? Getting a tattoo while traveling can be fun and exciting, but it can also be a disaster! So, here is what you need to look for and what you need to watch out for.
Do Some Research:
First, you will want to do at least a little research before you leave on your trip. Search yellow pages and other resources to find out what studios will be in the area you will be in. Check local studio listings to see if they have a website. Websites are useful because they provide information on the studio's exact location and hours. Many times they will also provide examples of their artwork, which can help you to determine if you even want to set foot in their shop. Choose at least three studios to visit personally once you get there.
Note:
Just because they have a website doesn't mean they're a good studio or have good artists. Pictures serve as an example, but always be cautious.
Just because they don't have a website doesn't mean they don't do good work. Good artwork doesn't require high-tech knowledge or computer skills.
Visit the Studios First:
Allow yourself plenty of time to thoroughly inspect each of the studios you have on your list. Resist the urge to get your tattoo at the first studio you visit! If you do, you'll end up finding something better later and regret being hasty.
Visit with the studio artists. Ask questions. Are they willing to talk with you and answer your questions to satisfaction? Do they have a professional and friendly manner? Do you feel comfortable with them?
How clean is the studio? How clean is the bathroom? Ask to see their autoclave and check out the work areas. You don't want to get a tattoo at a place that doesn't have a high regard for cleanliness.
Check out the portfolios. Each artist should have his or her own separate book or section - not a "potluck" collection for the studio. See if their work looks clean. Does the quality of the work reflect something you wouldn't mind wearing yourself?
Getting a Tattoo Out of the Country
If you're going to be visiting a country outside of your own, keep in mind that laws on hygiene and health vary from region to region. Also, the ink used will differ and if there are no policies on ink ingredients, it could contain harmful components or just simply elements your body is not used to, which could cause allergic reaction. Find out what the laws and health standards are in that area if you can.
Visiting a Well-Known Artist
If you're going to be visiting an area that is home to one of our more "renowned" artists, you will want to contact them well in advance and make an appointment. Some of them are in high-demand and have long waiting lists. You will want to assure you have a placement on their list before you arrive so you don't end up disappointed that they are booked up.
Final Notes
A couple more things to keep in mind is that if you plan on spending your vacation sunbathing or swimming, you can forget the tattoo unless you wait to get it on the day you leave. Also, if you get a tattoo far away from home, you won't be able to go back for touch-ups or consultations if anything goes wrong. If your search only turns up shoddy studios and bad artistry, it will be better if you just wait and get that tattoo when you get back home.
