When, How and Why You Became a Tattoo Artist
Started tattooing professionally in 2005. The job kind of fell into my lap. I was piercing at a shop here in Phoenix when the owner saw me drawing after his apprentice had quit and asked if I would like to learn. It’s kind of amazing; I never really set out to be a tattooist but now I can’t see not being one. It’s by far the best and most rewarding job I’ve ever had.

Pretty much anything with a good amount of color
Most Inspirational or Influential Tattoo Artists:
Bob Sims, Craig Driscoll, Adam Barton, and a myriad of others so many good tattoos out there that are inspirational not enough room to name them all.
Most Inspirational or Influential Contemporary Artists:
Love the art of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec and Alphonse Mucha. Pick up an issue of Juxtapoz or High Fructose magazine and you’re almost ensured to find inspiration on every page.
Other Interests and/or Hobbies:
I’m kind of a sports nerd; you could say I watch ESPN almost religiously (haha). Growing up in Kentucky, if you don’t like college basketball, it's kind of like telling your pastor that Satan doesn’t seem like such a bad guy. Other than that, I’ve recently started collecting horror films, particularly Asian horror.

Words of Wisdom From Minty Fresh:
To those aspiring to tattoo, be humble. Don’t go into it thinking you’re going to be the next big thing because chances are you’re not. Some are lucky and do amazing work right from the get go, but the majority of us have to work harder and practice, practice, practice. Never stop drawing, The more you draw the better your tattoos will look.
To those getting a tattoo, always look at portfolios. Just because someone works at a tattoo shop and says they can do what you’re asking doesn’t mean they can. Look at many different styles of tattoos and choose the artist that best suits the style that you’re looking at getting. Getting tattooed is a commitment that last longer than most marriages so take your time in deciding what you want and who you want to do it.
