It is commonly said that elephants never forget. In their old age, these creatures are gifted with such wisdom, that we as humans can't help but admire their strength, grace, and beauty. A universal symbol of strength, loyalty, divinity and good luck, an elephant makes an unforgettable tattoo design when carefully planned and properly placed on your body.

"A common theme with elephant tattoos seems to be their ability to hold a rich tapestry of meanings that resonate with people from all around the world," says professional tattoo artist Dillon Forte.

To learn more, we asked Forte about the meaning behind elephant tattoos, why, and where to get one.

What are Elephant Tattoos?

"Elephant tattoos can hold multiple meanings, depending on the design and beliefs/values of the client,' says Forte. "Elephants have a remarkable blend of compassion, strength, and intellect. Across so many cultures, they symbolize good fortune and embody ideals of power, strength, and prosperity." Below, find out more on the allure of an elephant tattoo.

Fertility

Not only does an elephant represent memory, empathy and compassion, there is a strong connection of the species to Buddhism, as it is said that the Buddha selected the rare white elephant for one of his incarnations. The white elephant symbolizes both wisdom and fertility, making it a beautiful choice for a maternal tattoo. Keep in mind if you get a white elephant tattoo and opt for white ink, it will fade over time. This may be a wise choice if you don't want visible commitment.

Loyalty

For lovers seeking a couple tattoo design who would rather forgo name or wedding ring designs, the stately elephant symbolizes both fidelity and loyalty—two key elements in any successful union.

Power/Strength

If you have conquered a physical, mental, or emotional obstacle, you might want a permanent representation of that strength. In addition to their size, elephant's are powerful, strong creatures that are a force against negativity.

"Many of my clients get the elephant tattoo to attract or show their strength to push through adversity," says Forte. "It's usually a symbol of spiritual dedication, and can be a reminder to show compassion, stay wise, and to remain strong through hard times."

Luck

Elephants are also known to represent luck and prosperity. Perhaps an event occurred that made you take a second look at how fortunate you are, or you want to illustrate your success with something that is meaningful.

Politics

In addition, elephants have long been representative of the Republican political party. In 1874, cartoonist Thomas Nast sketched the elephant for a cartoon featured in Harper's Weekly alongside the Democratic Donkey.

If you want to honor your political views with an animal rather than a flag or memorial tattoo, you may opt for the mighty elephant instead.

Elephant Tattoo Design Ideas

There are many ways to design an elephant for a tattoo. Some are very elaborate and detailed and others are simple, suggesting just the silhouette of the magnificent creature. If you have a playful persona, you may even consider using a finger for the trunk and the side of your hand for the body of your elephant tattoo.

First and foremost, the more detailed your elephant, the larger its size should be. For small or discreet locations, it would be best to opt for just an outlined elephant body. If you want something more elaborate, consider adding henna inspired artwork alongside your elephant for pretty detailing and fancy scrolling.

Another consideration is how many elephants will you wear? Elephants travel holding onto one another's trunks, which can be a sweet and symbolic way to honor family and loved ones. If you have three children, perhaps you can link them together in a charming family tattoo design? An elephant pack tattoo can also symbolize friendship and loyalty.

Forte has worked on many Ganesha elephant tattoos and designs with his clients. Ganesha is the elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings. "Ganesha is typically thought of as the remover of obstacles. Clients will blend the tattoo within other types/styles of tattoos in a sleeve or keep it separate on different parts of the body," he says.

Placement Concerns and Suggestions

While many people opt for clever placements for an elephant tattoo, always consider the long-term outcome. in Forte's experience, it is not so much as where the tattoo is placed, but if "it stands alone or is blended with a full piece of art that has other elements."

"Tattoos are obviously deeply personal to people, so you'd be surprised on what a similar tattoo means to one person compared to the next," he says. "For many spiritual clients, the elephant shows their progress on a spiritual journey towards enlightenment and just being a good person overall."

The elephant makes a beautiful statement on the forearm, shoulder blades, on the trunk of your leg, and even the chest. And while elephant hand and finger trunk tattoos are becoming much more popular, they might fade faster since we use our hands daily. Try to place the design where the trunk will follow the natural curves of your body and you'll have an elephant tattoo design that's harmonic with your own shape.

The Bottom Line

Wherever you decide to place your elephant tattoo, be sure that you understand the significance behind the symbol and consider it's placement when getting inked. To some, an elephant is an adorable creature, but to others, the meaning of its strength, grace, and resilience goes much deeper.
