Down Under the Skin

A 14 Year Old's Perspective on Tattoos

From Tessa Hudson, for About.com

Note from Karen: My daughter was bored one day so I suggested she write an essay about what she wants her first tattoo to be. This is what she wrote.

Okay, there must be a really good reason as to why I am writing an essay that I have not been assigned for a grade because I don't usually write willingly. One of the causes for this is because of my mom. She wanted me to do this. Another reason is that tattoos are probably one of the best subjects to write about. They are awesome beyond words, and the last and most important motive is the actual purpose of writing this essay, which is to inform someone other than myself as to why the heck my first tattoo will be done by the remarkable and awesome Deano Cook.

Okay, about my mom, as you can probably guess, she is a big fan of tattoos. Not only that, but her job is dedicated to tattoos and piercings. I wouldn't think there was a better job, expect maybe president, but just because it pays more. I don't think it would be very exciting. Anyway, she kind of got me excited about tattoos and now I am very upset that I have to wait four more years to turn eighteen. I think that once I am that old, I will find it was worth the wait, but I will remain upset until then. It will burn a lot of time.

On the subject of the actual tattoos. What could be more colorful or more symbolic than tattoos? NOTHING! Now, some tattoos people decide to get for no particular reason, others get them because that one little picture or collection of pictures tells a remarkable story, and the leftover people get tattoos because they lost a bet. I like the ones that tell stories better, because then you can actually ask them why they got it and not look like an idiot. My mom's tattoos don't have stories behind them; she just decided to get a collection of fairies and flowers, something she happens to be interested in. I have always been fascinated by marine life, and that carries us to the last reason that I am writing this lengthy, boring essay.

Deano Cook is probably one of the best, if not the best, marine tattoo artist, because he takes time to actually photograph real sea life instead of just throwing something together he found from pictures on the Internet and in magazines. It makes it even more amazing that way. I don't exactly know how he does it, because he lives in Georgia. Maybe when he makes trips down to Miami or something. What I plan on doing (when I turn eighteen and earn enough money to make a trip and pay for the tattoo) is ask him for a seahorse. I want to put it on my hip so that I can hide it at school and not get in trouble for having one. Seahorses are fragile creatures that move where the current takes them and I think they are really cool looking.

Well, I don't really know what else to say, but it probably doesn't matter because you didn't read this. It was too boring for the human eyes to handle. In that case....I think I'm done here.
