Growing Up in the Tattoo Industry by Mendi Klein
Granted, my clients love the work, and come back for more, but I see the potential the work could have had if I would have spent more time on it and if price was not an issue. I have a lot of clients that are impatient or on a deadline, or on a tight budget, so I have had to bend myself over backwards to meet those needs of each client, and it does affect the outcome of the whole design, let alone my stress level.

So now after thinking about it long and hard, I have changed a couple of things.....First I am going to keep both my careers for now, Tattooing and Graphic Design, I love both my jobs. I believe that if I control the scheduling a little better, and limit the stress of having to rush everything, my tattoo works of art will be better than ever. This means that my clients will have to work with me on my schedule and in some cases it may be 2-8 weeks before you can get in, but if you look around, that is usually the average waiting period for an Artist.

If a client works with me, and we design a tattoo that is a work of art instead of just a cover up or just a kanji, I know that the client will like it more and respect the fact that they will be wearing it for the rest of their life and appreciate the artistic aspect of it. PLUS they will know that I put my heart and soul into it and did not rush.

I have learned a lot by speaking to my Tattoo Peers from around the country and to become the artist that I have always dreamed of, I need to slow down and take more time on each tattoo design and with each client. I do not just want to just hammer out tattoos all day, I want to create award winning pieces of art that my clients will wear proudly and will come to appreciate the process of how we got there and how much the designs affect their life, especially if it is a sentimental piece of art that is close to their heart.

I pledge to all my future clients that I will give you 100 percent of pure art and that each client’s piece of art will be the best I can possibly make it and I hope that they appreciate and respect my new-found revelation and I hope to make every one of my client’s artistic dreams a reality in skin.
