When I got the tattoo

The tattoo began in 2005, where my back is finished, my leg is not.

Description of the tattoo/design

The overall theme represents how everything is connected. The symbols correspond to the five phase cycle from traditional Chinese medicine. The symbols come from around the world.

The Background Story

The idea for this tattoo began when I got my first tattoo of the Celtic tree of life. Over the years the idea of connection, earth, growth, and death (cycle of life) continued to grow. During my thesis I researched the use of Eastern medicine and it was here that I found the five phase cycle. This cycle is a branch off from yin and yang and represents the five elements of the earth (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). Their alignment counter clockwise displays growth, while the arrows represent their connection in decomposition. Much more can be said, but not enough space.

Why The Tattoo is So Special

This tattoo embodies my belief and spirit of the world around me. Not only does it symbolize my belief but through its beauty and mastery engages others in its meaning as well. Everyday I fall more in love with my art for life.

The artist, Dan Greuling, did all the art free hand and the work continues. Never before have I seen shading and detail with such delicacy and precision. As any tattooist would agree, the pictures do not give it justice.
