Does Glass Block Sun Rays?
Friday August 1, 2003
You may wonder what the leading question has to do with tattoos, but bear with me for a moment. A discussion was started on the message board, which stirred up a debate over whether or not glass (i.e. car windows) could block the sun. We all know that the sun can fade a tattoo and cause other skin damage, so the question was posed as to whether tattoos were safe from the sun when riding in a car with the windows up.
A website was mentioned where 2 physics experts answered that glass does, indeed, have UV ray blocking capabilities, depending on the type of glass. Some forum members, despite that information, said it was not possible.
So, it's Joseph Andersen to the rescue! About.com's very own guide to Physics, Joseph wrote a compelling article about how glass does shield your skin from some sun rays, but that your tattoos may still very well be at risk from damage. Why? Read all about it.
