Question of the Week - Tattoos and Stretch Marks

Sunday October 15, 2006
Q: I want to get a tattoo on my lower, lower back. However, I'm not perfect, lol, and I have some stretch marks on my lower back. Will this in any way be a problem, or even more painful? Or should I just get the tattoo elsewhere? I don't like needles as it is, but I don't think I'll have a problem with the pain.

A: Getting a tattoo in an area where you have stretch marks doesn't necessarily mean it will hurt more. Depending on the depth and width of the stretch marks, they may or may not be able to be tattooed directly over. If they can't, they could potentially be tattooed around and/or somehow incorporated into the design.

The only word of caution I would like to offer you is that since you are already prone to stretch marks in that area, if you become pregnant or gain weight at any time, it could result in additional stretch marks. If you already have a tattoo there and then stretch marks are formed over it, it will definitely ruin your artwork.

It's something to think about. Only you can decide if getting this tattoo is a good decision for you. Maybe you could go just a little higher to avoid the stretching area. It's up to you!

I have stretch marks from having 2 children close together. I was also worried about how they looked and how a tattoo would turn out. For me, it was painless. I got a tattoo over my pubic bone. Some of my stretch marks are really deep and stand out a great deal. My tattoo turned beatifully. It’s the Harley Davidson symbol (for my husband). I will be honest about one thing tho…some of the ink did bleed a wee bit in some places. It’s not totally noticeable unless I point it out. Only my hubby sees it so I am not too worried. I am happy that I did it. I say go for it. Do keep in mind your weight variance. Hope this helps.
