Forum Discussion: Blue Ink Turning White

Saturday July 11, 2009
wildcherry1212 writes: "My girl got a Dallas cowboys star with the logo underneath in dark blue ink. Saturday, so less than 48 hrs later it appears to have a white coating. She used Vaseline for only the 1st few hrs. Then Lubriderm lotion or A/D ointment. Is this normal or should she be worried about the color fading. Maybe not deep enough in her skin? I got a blue star in the design on my tatt and the color is fine (no white)."

Firstly, let me congratulate her on an excellent choice… Cowboys rule!!!

Now, in personal experience, tattoos usually heal slightly differently on different people. You and your daughter wouldn’t recover from a cut at exactly the same time.
In this case, I think it is best to carry on the A&D and wait for it to heal before worrying

How about contacting your professional tattooer who applied the tattoo?? Trusted them with the application…trust them with the aftercare.

This is the kind of stuff that drives us NUTS!!!! ‘Oh, I read on the internet to put bear grease on my tattoo so it must be right. I’ll ignore what you told me’

Yikes!!

A foggy white coating is (most likely) dried skin. The foggy coating should not be present if taken care of correctly, ALTHOUGH.. some people do heal differently so don’t worry. The coating should go away once the tattoo is completely healed. REMEMBER after-care is the most important thing after getting a new tattoo. IF there is any redness, swelling or in other words you feel that there is an infection present you should contact your physician accordingly, otherwise follow these simple instructions.
1. use a light moisturizer (fragrance free) throughout the day to keep the tattooed skin supple but not moist, don’t let it dry out until it is completely healed.

2. after three days you should not be using the A&D ointment any longer.

3. cleanse the skin area gently with warm water and anti-bacterial soap at least once a day. Do not scrub tattooed area at all.

DON’T
Expose fresh tattoo to prolonged sunlight especially sunburns can ruin a new tattoo.

NO swimming especially in free standing water such as lakes oceans and rivers (bacteria in free standing bodies of water can create infection and cause scarring.)No pools etc…

Do not peel skin off the tattoo if for some reason scabbing occurs let the scabs fall off naturally to preserve the ink underneath.

If your tattoo is in a location covered by clothing a piece of gauze can be taped over the moistened tattoo to prevent rubbing and irritation but should be removed to continue miniaturization aftercare.

VERY IMPORTANT — DO NOT USE VASELINE AT ALL or EVER it does not work and will cause the same white foggy coating of the skin. A simple moisturizer is the best way to assure a quality heal on a tattoo.

GOOD LUCK! post back if you have any other questions
