Don't Let Fear Hold You Back

I never really considered getting a tattoo before. I guess it was the unknown pain part that kept me from sitting in the hot seat. I've always asked the "inked" what theirs meant and of course "Did it hurt?" Each story was as unique as the tattoo itself. I always thought they were a form of art and was curious about the process, but always backed down on the idea of shelling out money to pay some stranger to stab me and put me through many minutes of torture.

I think what got me to go through it finally is when my best friend got one when she was in the Navy. For her first one ever it was a good sized one! She told me it didnt hurt but felt wierd.

Then about 5 years later my cousin came over sporting her new ink. She asked me to come stay the weekend with her so I did and I asked her about her tattoo and why she did it. She told me it didn't hurt but was an irritating pain. I told her about me wanting one some day and she then said, 'I have a good friend who does tattoos and he's gonna come over tonight. He's been a tat artist for years; do you want him to do one on you?' Then, I didn't even think twice and yelled, 'YES!!' Forgetting about all that kept me from getting one in the first place.

I didn't even know what to get so I decided since I liked dragonflies to get a small one on my left shoulder blade; that way it was little and I wouldn't have to go through much, at least until he started drawing on my back; then I went for a bigger one. What I ended up with is a green dragonfly, flying into a clouded sunset with a star and a tiny 'V' shaped bird in the background. The overall size of my masterpiece is 4 1/2" around. I love it! And the only part that even hurt was the wings - otherwise it was a piece of cake! The healing process is painful but so worth it to have something that represents freedom to me and it being my first experience, it was in the comfort of a home and got to really know my cousin's coolest friend.
